XIX a. pradžios Rusijos karai
XIX a. pradžioje Rusija buvo įsivėlusi į keletą karų. Ji kariavo su Prancūzija (1805, 1806—1807, 1812 m.), Iranu (1805—1813 m.), Turkija (1806—1812 m.), Švedija (1808— 1809 m.). Ypač sunkūs Rusijai buvo du pirmieji karai su Prancūzija. Rusija pati juos pradėjo ir abu pralaimėjo. Po antrojo karo pasirašyta Tilžės taika nepatenkino abiejų šalių ir labai užgavo rusų savimeilę.
1812 m. karo pradžia
Tačiau svarbiausias XIX a. pradžios Rusijos istorijos įvykis buvo 1812 m. karas su Prancūzija. Jis subrandino rusų patriotizmą, ypač tarp bajorijos, kuriai ligtol beveik netekdavo net rusiškai kalbėti, nes pagal to meto madą ne tik viešumoje, bet ir namie buvo kalbama tik prancūziškai.
Tilžės taikos sukurta Rusijos ir Prancūzijos sąjunga buvo laikina, nes jau tuo metu šių valstybių tarpusavio prieštaravimai nustelbė siekimą bendradarbiauti. Abi šalys rengėsi karui. Visus 1811 m. Napoleonas I telkė savo kariuomenę prie Rusijos vakarinių sienų, tikėdamasis stipriu staigiu smūgiu priversti ją kapituliuoti. Rusijos kariuomenės vadovybė kiek pavėluotai pradėjo karštligiškai statyti įtvirtinimus prie Nemuno, Dauguvos ir Berezinos.
Tuo metu Prancūzija sumobilizavo didžiausią pasaulyje kariuomenę — 1 mln. 200 tūkst. karių. Prie Rusijos sienų Napoleonas I sutelkė 600 tūkst. žmonių. Ši kariuomenė, išdėstyta 300 km ruože, turėjo daugelio metų pergalingų karų patirtį.
Rusija tuo metu turėjo 600 tūkst. kariuomenės. Tai buvo rekrutų armija, todėl šalis neturėjo parengtų rezervų. Tik 220 tūkst. rusų karių buvo sutelkta prie vakarinės sienos.
Ši kariuomenė telkėsi 600 km ruože: 1-oji armija stovėjo 180 km ruože tarp Raseinių ir Lydos, 2-oji armija — 50 km ruože tarp Nemuno ir Vakarų Bugo, o 3-oji — Valuinėje (1-ąją ir 2-ąją armijas skyrė 100 km, o 3-oji nuo 2-osios buvo nutolusi net per 200 km). Rusija tikėjosi karo, tačiau jam buvo nepasirengusi. Jos kariuomenės vadų planas trauktis prie Dauguvos ir ten laukti priešininko įtvirtintoje stovykloje buvo netikęs. Napoleonas I rengėsi smogti į 1-osios ir 2-osios armijos tarpą ir pavieniui sumušti jas dar pasienyje.
1812 m. birželio 12(24)-osios naktį Napoleono I kariuomenė keliomis kolonomis pradėjo keltis per Nemuną ties Kaunu ir anksti rytą įžengė į Kauną. Rusai pasitraukė be mūšio. Prancūzų kariuomenė sparčiai žygiavo priekin. Vyko tik nedideli susirėmimai su besitraukiančia Rusijos kariuomene. Jos 1-oji ir 2-oji armijos liepos 22 (rugpjūčio 3) d. prie Smolensko susijungė. Čia įvyko pirmas rimtesnis priešininkų susidūrimas. Napoleonui I skverbiantis tolyn į Rusiją, jo kariuomenės padėtis sunkėjo, nes tiekimo bazės ir rezervai nutolo nuo pagrindinių pajėgų, užnugaryje tekdavo palikti įgulas. Prancūzų kariuomenės užimtoje teritorijoje prasidėjo gyventojų neramumai, kurie peraugo į partizanų karą.
Borodino mūšis ir jo padariniai
Rugpjūčio 17(29) d. vadovavimą Rusijos kariuomenei perėmė naujas vyriausiasis vadas — Michailas Kutuzovas (1745—1813). Lemiamas mūšis įvyko rugpjūčio 26 (rugsėjo 7) d. Kutuzovo pasirinktose pozicijose Borodino laukuose prie Možaisko, tik už 20 km nuo Maskvos. Mūšis truko 12 valandų. Iš abiejų pusių jame dalyvavo 250 tūkst. karių ir apie 1230 pabūklų. Jėgos buvo apylygės. Mūšyje žuvo 50 tūkst. prancūzų ir 43 tūkst. rusų.
Po mūšio rusai pasitraukė ir dėl Maskvos daugiau nekovojo. Rugsėjo 2(14) d. Napoleonas I įžengė į miestą. Padegtoje Maskvoje prancūzų imperatorius laukė pasiūlymo derėtis dėl taikos. Nesulaukęs spalio 7(19) d. įsakė trauktis. Po daugelio triumfo metų atėjo didysis Napoleono Bonaparto pralaimėjimas. Rusijos kariuomenė privertė prancūzus grįžti senuoju Smolensko keliu, kuris buvo visiškai nuniokotas: kas dega — sudeginta, kas valgoma — suvalgyta. Šiuo keliu dvi didžiulės armijos prieš kelis mėnesius slinko Maskvos link ir pakeliui viską sunaikino. Besitraukiantys prancūzai badavo.
Karo pabaiga
Lapkričio 14(26) d. mūšyje prie Berezinos upės prancūzai neteko dviejų trečdalių dar turimų karių. Jie žuvo arba pateko į nelaisvę. Napoleono I kariuomenė pradėjo netvarkingai bėgti. Po kelių dienų imperatorius Smurgainiuose paliko kariuomenės likučius ir rogėmis išskubėjo į Vakarus. Pačioje 1812 m. pabaigoje per Nemuną — tuometinę Rusijos imperijos sieną — persikėlė tik apie 30 tūkst. prancūzų armijos karių. Didžiuliuose plotuose tarp Maskvos ir Nemuno dar keletą mėnesių rusų kareiviai gaudė miškuose ir kaimeliuose užsilikusius prancūzus.
Imperijos teritorijos plėtimas
XIX a. pradžioje ne kartą keitėsi Rusijos vakarinės sienos. Po paskutinio karo su Švedija (1808—1809 m.) Rusija prisijungė Suomiją ir Alandų salas. Iš prijungtų teritorijų buvo sudaryta Suomijos didžioji kunigaikštystė, kuri Rusijos imperijoje turėjo autonomiją. Pagal 1812 m. Bukarešto taikos su Turkija sąlygas Rusija gavo Besarabiją — nemažą teritoriją, esančią tarp Dnestro ir Pruto upių. Pagaliau pagal 1815 m. Vienos kongreso sąlygas Rusijai teko buvusios Varšuvos kunigaikštystės teritorija — nemažai lenkų žemių, Varšuva ir Lietuvos Užnemunė. Iš šitų teritorijų buvo sudaryta Lenkijos karalystė, iki 1831 m. turėjusi savo konstituciją ir ribotą autonomiją.
Naujosios žemės Rusijai buvo strategiškai labai svarbios. Bet toliau skverbtis į Vakarus Rusija jau negalėjo. Ji ilgam atsigręžė į Rytus.
Užkaukazės prisijungimas ir Kaukazo nukariavimas
Visą XIX a. pirmą pusę rusai atkakliai plėtė savo imperijos teritoriją Kaukaze. Kovodama su Turkija, Rusija veržėsi į Šiaurės Kaukazą ir Užkaukazę. Ji teisino savo ekspansiją Kaukazo krikščionių globa bei gynimu, nors dauguma Šiaurės Kaukazo ir kai kurios Užkaukazės tautos buvo musulmonai. Kaukaze būta daug didelių ir mažų, stiprių ir nusilpusių karalysčių, chanysčių ir kitokių valstybės darinių. Kaukazas Rusijai buvo labai svarbus kaip užtvara derlingoms pietinėms stepėms ir Juodosios jūros uostams.
Rusija nesitenkino tuo, kad Rytų Gruzija virto jos protektoratu. Šioje Kaukazo dalyje vyko negailestinga vietos kunigaikščių tarpusavio kova. Jie į pagalbą kvietėsi tai Turkiją, tai Iraną. Tad Rusija skubėjo pasinaudoti Gruzijos valdovo Georgijaus XII prašymu priimti šalį į Rusijos imperiją. 1801 m. Aleksandras I pasirašė manifestą dėl Gruzijos prijungimo prie Rusijos. Valdančioji Bagratidų dinastija buvo pašalinta, Kartlijos ir Kachetijos karalystė panaikinta. 1803—1804 m. Rusijos protektoratu virto Vakarų Gruzijos dalis — Megrelija ir Imeretija. Rusija ten jau laikė savo įgulas. Verždamasi į Kaukazą, Rusija stengėsi užkirsti kelią į šį regioną Anglijai.
Tuo metu Rusija prisijungė ir dalį dabartinio Azerbaidžano — Gandžos chanystę ir kitas žemes. 1805 m. kilo Rusijos karas su Iranu. Tai padėjo Rusijai užimti Azerbaidžano žemes. Ji prisijungė Karabacho, Sekino ir Širvano chanystes. Rusų kariuomenė užėmė Derbentą ir Baku, o 1806 m. prasidėjusio karo su Turkija metu — Suchumį ir kitus pajūrio miestus. Rusija greitai prisijungė visą Abchaziją ir sustiprino savo pozicijas Juodosios jūros Kaukazo pakraštyje. Pagal Bukarešto taikos sutartį (1812 m.) Rusijai atiteko jau anksčiau prisijungta Gruzija ir Abchazija.
Vėliau ir Turkija, ir Iranas reikalavo peržiūrėti 1812— 1813 m. sutartis, išvesti rusų kariuomenę iš Užkaukazės. Dėl to kilo nauji karai su Iranu (1826—1828 m.) ir Turkija (1828—1829 m). Po jų Rusija prisijungė Rytų Armėniją, Nachičevanės chanystę ir pietines Azerbaidžano sritis. Siena tarp Rusijos ir Irano nusistovėjo Arakso upe. Rusija visiškai įsitvirtino Kaspijos jūroje. Gavusi Juodosios jūros pakrantėje ruožą nuo Anapos iki Počio, ji galutinai įsiviešpatavo šiame regione.
Galutinai užvaldyti Kaukazą Rusijai nebuvo lengva. Karas su nedidelėmis Šiaurės Kaukazo tautomis truko beveik 50 metų ir buvo pavadintas Kaukazo karu (1817—1864 m). Rusų kariuomenė keldino vietinius gyventojus, grobė jų turtą ir griovė ūkį. Sunkiausiai Rusijai sekėsi kovoti su Dagestanu ir Čečėnija. Šiaurės Kaukazo tautos atkakliai grūmėsi su rusų armija, negaudamos iš kitų šalių jokios paramos. Turkijos parama buvo neefektyvi, daugiausia propagandinė. Vykstant kovoms su Rusija, kalniečių pasipriešinimo vadovai bandė sukurti keletą valstybių. Imamas Šamilis 1834 m. sukūrė gana stiprią Dagestano ir Čečėnįjos kalniečių valstybę. Todėl Dagestanas ir Čečėnija priešinosi ilgiausiai. Rusijos kariuomenė Šiaurės Kaukaze ne tik kariavo, bet ir kūrė rusų nausėdijas. Pasibaigus Krymo (Rytų) karui, tolesnė kalniečių kova pasidarė beviltiška. Rusų kariuomenė tik praėjus 5 metams po to, kai žlugo Šamilio sukurta valstybė, užėmė kalnų teritorijas. Rusija galutinai įsitvirtino Šiaurės Kaukaze, be kurio jai buvo labai sunku išsilaikyti Užkaukazėje.
XIX a. 4-ame ir 5-ame dešimtmetyje Rusija plėtė teritorijas Vidurinės Azijos prieigose ir stiprino strategines pozicijas. Dėl politinių intrigų be didesnio pasipriešinimo Rusijos valdiniais tapo Vyresniojo žuzo kazachai. Taigi beveik visas Kazachstanas buvo prijungtas prie imperijos.
