Anglijos industrializacijos prielaidos
Naujausi istoriniai tyrinėjimai rodo, kad Anglijos industrializacijos šaknys glūdi XVIII a. pr., siekia net XVII a. Pramonės perversmą nulėmė ne vien technikos išradimai – garo mašina, mechaninės audimo ir verpimo staklės. Iki pat XVIII a. pab., net ir įdiegus šiuos išradimus, tiek pramonės, tiek socialinė struktūros beveik nepasikeitė. Tik nuo XIX a. pr. įvyko esminiai lūžiai. XVIII a. Anglija buvo agrarinė šalis. Nuo kitų Europos valstybių ji skyrėsi žymiai didesne prekyba, kuri nuolatos plėtojosi. Anglija turėjo daug kolonijų įvairiose pasaulio kraštuose, senas prekybos tradicijas. Šalyje buvo gausu žaliavų, visų pirma akmens anglies, geležies. Be to, priešingai nei Europos šalyse, Anglijos aristokratija, sudariusi apie 1,5% visų gyventojų, mielai vertėsi šiuo verslu. Anglijos bajorijos vaikai, nepaveldėję žemės, be tarnybos kariuomenėje, dvasininko karjeros, dažniausiai pasirinkdavo verslą arba prekybą. Kita vertus, anglai, kilę iš žemesnių visuomenės sluoksnių, galėjo siekti karjeros, tapti verslininkais, pramonininkais. XVIII a. pab. net trečdalį visuomenės Anglijoje sudarė taip vadinamas vidurinysis sluoksnis. Tai buvo nemažas pajamas gaunantys žmonės: žemės nuomininkai, vidutinių ūkių savininkai, pirkliai, smulkių ir vidutinių parduotuvių savininkai, inteligentai. Žemiau už vidutinįjį sluoksnį buvo smulkūs amatininkai bei kvalifikuoti darbininkai, gavę mažesnes pajamas. Apie pusė gyventojų gyveno labai skurdžiai, jiems dažnai trūkdavo duonos. Pramonės perversmas jų padėčiai įtakos neturėjo. Tačiau šiai žmonių grupei plūstelėjus į miestus, jų skurdas tapo akivaizdesnis.Pagrindinį vaidmenį, plėtojant pramonę, suvaidino vidurinysis sluoksnis arba buržuazija. Nemažą reikšmę turėjo ir anglikonų tikėjimas, puritonizmas, kuris skatino anglus taupyti pinigus, o lėšas investuoti į savo verslą arba prekybą, siekti materialinės gerovės, visuomenėje iškilti daug ir intensyviai dirbant.
Žemės ūkio raida
Nemažą reikšmę Anglijos industrializacijai turėjo taip vadinama agrarinė revoliucija. Augant gyventojų skaičiui, sparčiai augo Žemės ūkio produktų paklausa. Todėl buvo stengiamasi intensyviau ūkininkauti, išauginti didesnius derlius. Kadangi iš žemės buvo galima gauti didžiulių pajamų, jos kaina nuolatos augo. Daugelis nuomininkų negalėjo nuomoti sklypų ir tapo tiesiog žemės ūkio darbininkais. Savo žemės neteko ir smulkūs valstiečiai, kurių ūkius supirkinėjo arba už skolas atiminėjo stambūs žemės savininkai. Jie ir buvusias bendruomenės žemes pavertė savo nuosavybe. Tokių žemės netekusių žmonių vaikai traukė į miestus, ieškodami galimybių užsidirbti pragyvenimui. Agrarinė revoliucija sukūrė palankias sąlygas vystytis pramonei. Vystantis žemės ūkiui išaugo pramonės gaminių paklausa ir dėl to išsiplėtė vidaus rinka. Dėl aukštų žemės ūkio produktų kainų, nemažo pelno žemės ūkyje buvo kaupiamas kapitalas, kuris vėliau buvo investuojamas į pramonę. Ir tai darė ne tik buržuazija. Anglijos aristokratija nuo seno savo ūkiuose kūrė lentpjūves, akmens skaldyklas. Jie vis daugiau investavo į prekybą, akmens anglies ir geležies rūdos šachtas, fabrikus. Aristokratija daug lėšų skyrė tiesti kelius, kasti kanalus.
Žemyno blokados padariniai
Anglijai įsitraukus į karą prieš Prancūziją, Napoleonas keletą metų planavo invaziją į šią valstybę-salą. 1805 m. Trafalgaro mūšyje jungtinis prancūzų ir ispanų laivynas buvo sutriuškintas, Napoleono kariuomenę siųsti į britų salas tapo nerealu. Jis nutarė sustiprinti nuo 1793 m. vykdytą ekonominę Anglijos blokadą ir 1806 m. pab. įvedė žemyno blokadą, visoms Europos valstybėms uždrausdamas prekiauti ir palaikyti ekonominius ryšius su Anglija. Žemyno blokada neprivertė Anglijos pasiduoti. Priešingai, gamyba ir prekyba dar labiau išaugo. Europos šalys, pažeisdamos draudimą, ir toliau palaikė ryšius su Anglija, iš kurios buvo įvežama daugiau tekstilės gaminių bei mašinų. Kad blokada būtų apeinama, buvo naudojamos licencijos keistis prekėmis. Buvo prekiaujama ir nelegaliai, klestėjo kontrabanda. Įvedus blokadą, Anglija negalėjo importuoti grūdų iš Europos, visų pirma Rytų Europos. Todėl Anglijos vyriausybė visomis priemonėmis skatino žemės ūkio plėtrą. Pakilus žemės ūkio produktų kainoms, anglų bajorija ir buržuazija buvo suinteresuoti investuoti į žemės ūkį. Buvo įsisavinti visi žemdirbystei tikę laukai, nusausinti milžiniški žemės plotai. Už maisto produktus buvo gaunamos didžiulės pajamos, todėl net valstiečiai ėmė mėgdžioti aristokratus – statyti sodybas, panašias į lendlordų vilas. Be žemės ūkio, sparčiai vystėsi ir kitos ekonomikos šakos. Ypatingai greitai augo tekstilės pramonė. Anglija iš savo kolonijų galėjo importuoti vis daugiau medvilnės ir išvežti į jas savo gaminių. Nuo 1793 iki 1812 m., t.y. karo metais net penkis kartus išaugo geležies perdirbimo pramonė, nes jos reikėjo karo reikalams. Karo laikotarpiu atsirado ir pirmieji visiškai mechanizuoti tekstilės fabrikai. Ypač išaugo užsienio prekyba, Anglija įsigalėjo kaip jūrų valstybė ir vis labiau ėmė veržtis į kolonijas.
Modernios kredito ir finansų sistemos kūrimas
Stipriai besiplėtojančiai pramonei reikėjo daug investicijų ir kreditų. Anglijoje, kitaip nei kitose Europos valstybėse, jau XIX a. pr. buvo sukurta daug privačių nedidelių bankų. Jie galėjo teikti palankius kreditus vystyti pramonei bei transporto sistemai. Monopoliniai valstybiniai bankai Europoje tokių ilgalaikių kreditų tuo metu dar beveik neteikdavo. Be to, Anglijoje išsivystė nemažai pramonės šakų, iš kurių gaunamą pelną jau buvo galima panaudoti kitose srityse. XIX a. pr. ekonomikos plėtimą daugiausiai finansavo tekstilės pramonė ir žemės ūkis. Anglija pirmavo ir kuriant naujas įmonių formas – akcines bendroves. Jos leido finansuoti didelius projektus, didelių fabrikų ar geležinkelių statybą, nes tokių bendrovių akcijas išpirkdavo tūkstančiai smulkių akcininkų, taip būdavo surenkamas nemažas kapitalas. Atsirado biržos, kuriose buvo perkamos ir parduodamos tokių bendrovių akcijos.
Anglų inžinierių ir mašinų “eksportas” į žemyną
Po Vienos kongreso Anglija prekių įvežimą apribojo muitais. Tokios pat politikos ėmėsi ir kitos Europos šalys, nes jas užplūdo pigios anglų prekės, kurios vertė bankrutuoti smulkius vietinius gamintojus. Valstybėms įvedus didelius muitus, iškilo svarbus klausimas – kaip galima paspartinti ekonomikos pažangą, pasivyti Angliją, sustiprinti pramonę, kad ji galėtų sėkmingai konkuruoti.
Europos valstybės pradėjo ieškoti būdų, kaip įdiegti tuos pasiekimus ir techniką, kuri jau buvo sukurta Anglijoje. Tai nebuvo lengva, nes įvedus muitus, Anglija ribojo, o dažnai net draudė išvežti naujausias mašinas. Anglų inžinieriams taip pat buvo draudžiama išvykti į kitas šalis ir padėti jų pramonininkams susipažinti su visomis technikos naujovėmis bei jas įdiegti. Apribojimai nesustabdė nei prekybos mašinomis, nei anglų inžinierių “eksporto”. Įvairios technikos naujovės buvo išvežamos nelegaliai. Mokant didžiulius atlyginimus anglų inžinieriai buvo paperkami ir viliojami į kitas šalis. Prancūzijoje trečiajame XIX a. dešimtmetyje dirbo net keli tūkstančiai iš Anglijos atvykusių specialistų, kurie apmokė, kaip naudotis naujausiomis mašinomis. Tuo metu labai išplito ekonominis šnipinėjimas. Ypač juo išgarsėjo Prūsija, siuntusi savo žmones į Angliją, kad šie sužinotų apie naujausius išradimus ir jų panaudojimą. Nepaisant visų pastangų, nė vienai Europos šaliai tuomet dar nepavyko pasivyti Anglijos.
