Žydų žudynės
Vienas iš svarbiausių Hitlerio siekių buvo žydų tautos sunaikinimas. Visose okupuotose šalyse naciai persekiojo, šaudė žydus, siuntė juos į koncentracijos stovyklas, kur marino badu, nuodijo dujomis.
Frontui nusiritus į rytus, iš Vokietijos į Lietuvą atvyko dar gegužės mėnesį sudarytos specialiosios naikinimo grupės (Einsatzgruppen), kurios pagal iš anksto parengtus planus turėjo išžudyti komunistus, žydus, čigonus. Žydai bijojo vokiečių okupacijos, bet pasitraukti iš Lietuvos į Rytus didžioji jų dalis neturėjo jokių galimybių, nes frontas per Lietuvą praėjo labai greitai. Kartais bėgančius apšaudydavo sukilėliai arba prie senosios SSRS Sienos sustabdydavo enkavedistai, kurie siekė, kad į Sovietų Sąjungos gilumą neprasiskverbtų „šnipai ir diversantai“. Sulaikytieji turėdavo grįžti atgal, bet tai karo suirutės sąlygomis buvo pavojinga ar net draudžiama. Dažnas žydas į savo namus galėjo grįžti tik slapta. Karo pradžioje į Sovietų Sąjungos gilumą iš Lietuvos pasitraukė apie 20 tūkst. žmonių, pirmiausia komunistų ir su jais artimai susijusių sovietinio režimo veikėjų. Į Rytus pasitraukė tik apie 8,5-10 tūkst. žydų, t. y. labai menka Lietuvos žydų dalis.
Žydai nepriklausomoje Lietuvoje sudarė daugiau nei 7 proc. Lietuvos gyventojų. Jau pirmosiomis karo dienomis pradėtas masinis jų naikinimas. Nacių agentams pavyko suorganizuoti kelis pogromus. Pavyzdžiui, per pirmomis okupacijos dienomis vykusį pogromą Vilijampolėje brutaliai nužudyta apie tūkstantis žydų. Pogromą vykdė ginkluoti vokiečiai iš Einzatskomandos, kelios lietuvių sukilėlių grupės ir jų vardu veikiantys įvairaus plauko nusikaltėliai. Karinė vokiečių vadovybė nesistengė nutraukti žudynių, nes tokie buvo nurodymai „iš viršaus“. Panašios „keršto akcijos“ prieš niekuo nenusikaltusius ir apsiginti negalinčius beginklius žmones, tarp jų ir mažus vaikus, buvo suorganizuotos ir kitose šalyse, pavyzdžiui, Lenkijoje, Latvijoje, Ukrainoje. Nacių slaptųjų tarnybų suplanuoti pogromai, žudynės Vokietijoje buvo pristatomos kaip vietos gyventojų kerštas žydams už tariamą paramą sovietams. Vokiečių vaidmuo juose buvo ypatingai slepiamas. Apskritai Vokietijos vadai, bijodami visuomenės nepasitenkinimo, žydų žudynes, jų naikinimą mirties stovyklose slėpė iki pat karo pabaigos. Net esesininkams buvo griežtai draudžiama apie tai kalbėti.
Prie kiekvieno Lietuvos miesto ar didesnio miestelio yra vietos, kur pirmaisiais karo mėnesiais buvo sušaudyta tūkstančiai žydų: iš pradžių vyrai, vėliau seniai, moterys ir vaikai. Didžiules kapų duobes turėdavo išsikasti patys žydai arba suvaryti apylinkių gyventojai. Vėliau būdavo kolonomis atvaromi pasmerktieji, sustatomi ant duobės krašto ir šaudomi. Žinoma maždaug 200 tokių žudynių vietų. Dažniausiai prieš mirtį žydai buvo verčiami nuogai nusirengti (rūbai reikalingi žudikams). Iš bejėgių mirties akivaizdoje stovinčių žmonių buvo tyčiojamasi. Pagrindinę žydų dalį išžudė specialiai parengti daliniai, įvairios nacių sukurtos naikinimo „komandos“, tarp kurių labiausiai žudynėmis, vykdytomis visoje Lietuvoje, liūdnai išgarsėjo SS ober6turmfiurerio J. Hamano vadovaujamas „skrajojantis būrys“. Tas būrys, kuriame buvo ir vokiečių ir lietuvių, važinėjo po visą Lietuvą ir talkininkaujant vietos baltaraiščiams ir policijai šaudė žydus. Iki 1941 m. pabaigos buvo nužudyta apie 165 tūkstančiai žydų. Likusių situacija buvo klaiki: gyvenimas kas dieną matant mirtį ir žinant, kad kažkurią dieną ateis ir tavo eilė, o tu negali nieko pakeisti. Panašiai kaip ir žydus naciai persekiojo ir žudė čigonus – tiek suaugusius, tiek vaikus.

Mūsų šeima niekad nerėmė komunistų organizacijos. Aš baigiau lietuvių pradinę mokyklą, vėliau įstojau į Kauno žydų gimnaziją kurioje visi dalykai buvo dėstomi lietuvių kalba. Mano motina Rebeka niekur nedirbo, šeimininkavo namuose. Tėvas kadaise studijavo Grenoblyje, motina buvo baigusi gimnaziją. Tėvas buvo vienos stambios JAV firmos atstovas Lietuvoje. Sovietams okupavus Lietuvą, mūsų gimnazija kartu su beveik visomis kitomis žydų gimnazijomis buvo uždaryta, o mus, mokinius, prijungė prie buvusios Jėzuitų gimnazijos. Firma, kurioje dirbo mano tėvas, buvo uždaryta, ir apie pusę metų tėvas negalėjo gauti jokio darbo. 1941 metų žiemą mano tėvas sunkiai susirgo skrandžio vėžiu, pavasarį jį operavo ir, prasidėjus karui, jis buvo prikaustytas prie lovos. Sekmadienį, t. y. birželio 22 d., mano motina su savo artimaisiais svarstė, ar mūsų šeimai trauktis į Rytus. Bet niekas iš artimųjų nenorėjo trauktis. Rytą (1941 m. birželio 27 d.), apie 6 valandą, į mūsų butą Vytauto prospekte Nr. 28 įsiveržė 5 baltaraiščiai kartu su buvusiu mano močiutės kiemsargiu. Jis juos atvedė ir iškilmingai pasakė: „Štai kur visi komunistai žydai slapstosi.” Be jokių kalbų ir paaiškinimų, kad nesame komunistai, kad mūsų gimines prieš savaitę išvežė sovietai, baltaraiščiai suėmė visus penkis to namo gyventojus vyrus, tarp jų tris mano motinos brolius: Solomoną, Isaką ir Abraomą Viravičius. Nepadėjo jokie prašymai pasigailėti. Visus penkis išvedė į kiemą ir kiek atokiau nuo namo, prie pat Vytauto parko, sušaudė. Aš tai mačiau savo akimis ir iš baimės netekau žado, negalėjau pajudėti iš vietos.

Pristatydamas šį susirašinėjimą, pranešu ponui direktoriui, kad nuo šios dienos man pavestoje apskrityje žydų nėra. Juos sutvarkė vietos partizanai su pagalbine policija: 13 rugsėjo 1941 m. Pranešu ponui vadui, kad š. m. rugsėjo 14 d. Varėnos I klebonas Gylys Jonas pasakė bažnyčioje priešvalstybinio pobūdžio pamokslą. Kadangi paminėtą dieną Varėnoje I buvo atlaidai, buvo bažnyčioje daug žmonių. Kunigas Gylys savo pamoksle vadino Lietuvos pareigūnus budeliais, sakydamas: „Nekaltus žmones mušė uniformuoti lietuviai, stumdė senius ir nėščias moteris, be to, Varėnos mišką aplaistė nekaltų krauju. Jie kentėjo kaip Kristus nuo judošių. Be to, dar nespėjo jų kraujas nudžiūti, o jie jau grobstė jų turtą.“ Kaip matosi, klebonas, sakydamas šį pamokslą, turėjo omenyje užtarti žydus, kurie š. m. rugsėjo 10 d. buvo likviduoti. <….>

Tarp tų, kurie žudė nekaltus beginklius žmones, buvo lietuvių. Dalyvauti moterų, vaikų, senukų, beginklių ir negalinčių pasipriešinti vyrų žudynėse normaliam žmogui buvo per sunkus moralinis išbandymas. Ne vienam kariui, ne savo noru patekusiam į šaudytojų gretas, pairo nervai. Tautinio darbo apsaugos bataliono kuopos vadas kapitonas Bronius Kirkila po žudynių nusišovė, kiti prašėsi atleidžiami iš tokios „tarnybos“, dar kiti dezertyravo. Bet buvo ir tokių kurie žudė nekaltus žmones iš godumo, norėdami praturtėti, dėl savo antisemitinių pažiūrų, kiti vien todėl, kad galėjo nebaudžiami žudyti. Dažnai žudikai ne tik sušaudydavo mažus vaikus, moteris, senius, bet prieš tai dar apiplėšdavo, atimdavo vertingesnius daiktus, net rūbus, kuriuos vėliau nešdavosi namo, parduodavo ar paprasčiausiai pragerdavo.
Jau po karo už dalyvavimą žydų žudynėse apie 1250 asmenų Lietuvoje buvo nuteisti įvairiomis bausmėmis, iš jų iki 1947 m. sušaudyti 257.
Lietuvoj gyventojų dauguma tyliai smerkė žudynes, o jose dalyvavusius lietuvius paniekinamai vadino „žydšaudžiais“. Juos demaskuodavo pogrindžio spauda, iš sakyklų smerkė daug kunigų (suprantama, ne visi). Net vokiečiams simpatizavusios Lietuvių nacionalistų partijos vadovas Zenonas Blynas buvo pasipiktinęs žydų žudynėmis, o ypač tuo, kad naciai labai uoliai fiksavo fotografuodami ir filmuodami lietuvių dalyvavimą jose.
Vilniuje, Kaune, Šiauliuose, Švenčionyse, Panevėžyje ir kituose miestuose žydams, išlikusiems gyviems pirmųjų masinių žudynių metu, buvo sukurti getai – izoliuoti, saugomi miestų rajonai, iš kurių iškraustyti visi nežydai. Getų gyventojai gyveno ypač sunkiomis sąlygomis. Žydai privalėjo prie viršutinių drabužių prisisiūti šešiakampes geltonas žvaigždes. Jiems buvo draudžiama naudotis transporto priemonėmis, turėti radijo imtuvus, pirkti ir parsinešti į getus maisto, kuro, be leidimo išeiti iš getų, vaikščioti šaligatviais ar grupėmis (leidžiama eiti kelkraščiu ir tik vorele vienam paskui kitą). 1941-1944 m. getuose gyvenę žydai buvo palaipsniui sunaikinti per įvairias „akcijas“. Pavyzdžiui, žinoma „vaikų akcija“, kai buvo sugaudyti, o vėliau nužudyti gete gyvenę žydų vaikai. Beginkliai tėvai nieko negalėjo pakeisti. Buvo „akcijų“, per kurias sugaudydavo, o vėliau sušaudydavo senukus. 1941 m. spalio 29 d. Vilijampolės gete vokiečiai atrinko beveik 10 tūkst., jų supratimu, gyventi nevertų žydų, nuvarė į IX fortą ir ten visus sušaudė. Vokiečiai aiškino, kad tokios akcijos būtinos, nes vaikai ir seniai neduoda naudos, o maisto ir taip trūksta. Žydų moterims buvo uždrausta gimdyti vaikus. Nėštumas buvo baudžiamas mirtimi.

ŽYDBERNIAI!
Gaila, kad dar šiandien Kaune ir artimose apylinkėse yra daug žmonių, pas kuriuos užtinkami Izraelio nagų pėdsakai. Reikia tik kai kada pastudijuoti įvairius miesto atsitikimus. Kai po pietų žydų darbo kolonos grįžta atgal į getto, tada atsitinka tiesiog nepatikimi dalykai. Aš pats turėjau progos paskutinėmis dienomis pamatyti, kai viena elegantiškai apsirengusi lietuvė ponia priėjo prie kolonos, pasveikino vieną žydą, nepaprastu nuoširdumu paspaudė jam ranką ir pradėjo su juo kalbėtis.
Vis galima dar pastebėti, kad miesto ir miesto pakraščių gyventojai, remdamiesi savo sena pažintimi, aprūpina žydus maistu. Tikrinant žydų darbo kolonas, buvo rasta daug neabejotinų pavyzdžių šiuo reikalu. Kaip tai galima, kad žydai ir žydės iš darbo kolonų nueina į butus ir ten su jais elgiamasi veik kaip su sau lygiais? – Užuot išvarę šiuos gaivalus iš namų su jais plepa ir net prekiauja. Kokie tai pasigailėjimo verti žmonės, kurie tinkamai nesielgia ir tuo sudaro apie savo tautą blogą įspūdį. Dar labiau smerktina yra ūkininkų prekyba priemiesčiuose. Paklausus ūkininkus, ar jie neturi maisto ir daržovių, jie nieko neatsako, bet žydams jie mielai „parduoda“. Tai yra ypatinga draugystė. Pasakyk su kuo tu eini, ir aš tau pasakysiu, kas tu esi.

1943 m. gruodžio mėn. 80 geto žydų, įskaitant 4 moteris, mane ir mano draugą buvo apgyvendinti erdvioje duobėje. Jos diametras buvo 60 metrų ir jos gylis – 4 metrai . Ten mes gyvenome 6 mėnesius, iki išbėgimo. Tą duobę saugojo SS vyrai. Grandinėmis buvo apjuosti mūsų liemenys ir čiurnys. Jos svėrė apie 2 kilogramus. Mes jas nešiojome be pertraukos šešis mėnesius. SS pasakė, kad kiekvienas, kuris nusiims grandines, bus pakartas. Mums buvo įsakyta atkasti masinius kapus, išimtus lavonus sukrauti ant laužo ir juos sudeginti.
Mes iškasėme išviso 68 000 lavonų. Aš tai žinau, nes du mūsų žydai pagal vokiečių įsakymą turėjo lavonus skaičiuoti – ta pareiga buvo jų vienintelis darbas.
Lavonų deginimo tvarka buvo absoliučiai metodiška. Buvo iškasamos lygiagretės septynių metrų ilgumo duobės Ant jų buvo dedamos storų lentų lubos. Tada buvo klojamas lavonų sluoksnis ir apipilamas žibalu. Toliau sekė šakų ir malkų sluoksnis. Kiekviename lauže buvo 14 gausiai žibalu apipiltų lavonų eilių.
Sargybiniai (ypatingai SS vyrai) mus mušdavo ir badydavo. Aš iki dabar turiu randus ant abiejų kojų ir sprando . Iš 76 darbininkų 11 buvo nušauti darbo metu. Keturiasdešimt trys iš mūsų išsikasė nuogomis rankomis iš duobės požeminį tunelį, nukirto pančius ir pabėgo į mišką. Mus įspėjo vienas čekas SS vyras. Jis pasakė mums, kad ir mes visi būsime greitai sušaudyti ir sukrauti ant lavonų stirtos.
Galutinai sunaikinant Vilniaus (1943 09 23) ir Kauno getus (1944 liepos mėn.) keliasdešimt tūkstančių išlikusių žydų buvo išvežti į įvairias koncentracijos stovyklas. Keliems šimtams žydų pavyko pabėgti ir pasislėpti. Dalis pabėgusių prisijungė prie miškuose veikusių sovietinių partizanų. Lietuvoje taip pat buvo žudomi ir iš kitų šalių atvežti žmonės. Net 94 proc. Lietuvos žydų tapo sąmoningo žydų tautos naikinimo, vadinamo holokaustu, aukomis. Daugiausiai žmonių nužudyta Paneriuose, prie Vilniaus (apie 70 000, iš jų – apie 50 000 žydų), ir Kauno fortuose. Vien IX forte nužudyta apie 50 tūkst. žmonių iš kurių apie 30 tūkst. žydai. Pasipriešinti, pakeisti žiauraus likimo nebuvo jokių galimybių. Getuose veikė pogrindžio organizacijos. Štai 1943 m. gete buvo suimtas pogrindžio vadas I. Vitenbergas, bet jo draugai jį išvadavo. Tuomet vokiečiai pateikė ultimatumą – jei jis nepasiduos, getas bus likviduotas. Nekyla abejonių kad grasinimas būtų buvęs įvykdytas ir visi arba didžioji geto gyventojų dalis būtų sušaudyta. Vitenbergas pasidavė ir buvo nukankintas.
Karo pabaigoje vokiečiai, jausdami artėjantį atpildų atkasinėjo ir degino lavonus, naikino dokumentus ir kitaip slėpė savo nusikaltimų pėdsakus. Tiek IX forte, tiek Paneriuose lavonus atkasinėjo žydai, kurie gerai suprato, kas jų laukia užbaigus darbus. Todėl jie parengė ir sėkmingai įgyvendino pabėgimo planus. Iš Panerių žudynių vietos degintojai pabėgo išsikastu tuneliu.
Lietuvoje saugant getus ir žydų žudymo akcijose, be vokiečių ir lietuvių dalyvavo ir ukrainiečių rusų latvių estų policiniai daliniai.
Žydų gelbėjimas
Holokaustą išgyveno tik apie 6 proc. Lietuvos žydų t. y. apie 12-15 tūkstančių žmonių. Iš jų tik apie 3000 žydų išgyveno slapstomi pačioje Lietuvoje. Dar apie 1650 žydų išgyveno būdami partizanų būriuose.
Naciai grasindami įvairiomis bausmėmis krikščionims draudė bendrauti, prekiauti su žydais, o už jų slėpimų maitinimą ar kitokią paramą suėmimas ar mirtis grėsė visai šeimai. Nepaisant to, nemažai žmonių rizikuodami gyvybėmis, padėjo persekiojamiems bendrapiliečiams. Apie daugelį tokių atvejų niekas niekada net nesužinos, nes dažniausiai gelbėtojai net artimiausiems giminaičiams neprasitardavo, kas slapstosi jų daržinėje, tvarte ar rūsyje. Šiuo metu gelbėtojų sąrašuose yra maždaug trys tūkstančiai Lietuvos piliečių pavardžių. Beveik penkiems šimtams lietuvių už žydų gelbėjimą yra suteiktas Pasaulio teisuolio vardas. Kartais žydai gelbėtojams atsilygindavo materialiai, bet dažniausiai pagalbos ranka buvo ištiesiama vadovaujantis humanistiniais motyvais. Tarp išgelbėtų žydų didelė dalis vaikai. Suaugę žydai patys dažnai likdavo getuose, o savo vaikus slapta atiduodavo lietuviams išgelbėti. Tokie vaikai persekiojamus žydus atjaučiančių kunigų dažnai būdavo pakrikštijami, gaudavo naujus vardus ir dokumentus. Pavyzdžiui, Kaune gyvenęs kunigas Bronius Paukštys padėjo iš geto išsigelbėjusiems žydams, o žydų vaikams išrašė apie 120 suklastotų gimimo liudijimų.
Tuos „naujus krikščionis“ priglausdavo ar įvaikindavo kunigo surastos padorių lietuvių šeimos. Įdomu tai, kad Br. Paukštį, sugebėjusį išvengti gestapo nagų, suėmė ir į lagerius išsiuntė Lietuvą okupavę sovietai. Daug žydų išgelbėjo vienuoliai. Žemaitis ūkininkas J. Striaupis, padedamas giminių ir pažįstamų, išgelbėjo net 26 žydus. Tarp gelbėtojų – 143 kunigai, daug inteligentų. Buvo ir tokių, kurie patys negalėdami priglausti besislapstančiųjų, rinko aukas, pinigus ar aprašinėjo vykstančias žudynes. Gydytojas Viktoras Kutorga parašė „Kreipimąsi į pasaulio tautas“, kuriame detaliai anglų kalba aprašė vokiečių prieš Lietuvos žydus įvykdytus nusikaltimus. Tas dokumentas su prašymu gelbėti žudomus žmones buvo perduotas JAV ambasadai Berlyne. Į generalinį tarėją generolą P. Kubiliūną su prašymu sustabdyti žydų naikinimą kreipėsi Lietuvos vyskupų konferencijos įgaliotasis atstovas vyskupas V. Brizgys. Žymūs politikai M. Krupavičius, J. Aleksa ir buvęs prezidentas K. Grinius vokiečiams įteikė memorandumą, kuriame buvo protestuojama prieš žydų žudymą. Už tai pirmieji du buvo išsiųsti į Vokietiją, o Griniui, kuris tuo metu buvo 75 metų amžiaus, nurodyta išvažiuoti iš Kauno į provinciją. Grinius ir jo šeima kurį laiką slėpė kelis iš geto pabėgusius žydus.
Apie 6 tūkst. Lietuvos žydų laimingo atsitiktinumo dėka sulaukė karo pabaigos nacių koncentracijos stovyklose. Raudonosios armijos ir sąjungininkų spaudžiami esesininkai dažnai turėdavo sprukti nespėję išžudyti visų koncentracijos stovyklose mirti pasmerktų žmonių. Nemažą išlikusių Lietuvos žydų dalį sudarė 1941 m. birželio tremtiniai. Tai, kas pradžioje kartu su lietuviais tremiamiems į Sibirą žydams (jų ištremta apie 2 000) atrodė baisi nelaimė, padėjo išvengti nacių rasistinės naikinimo politikos.
