Pramonės perversmas
Pirmųjų paprastų mašinų ir fabrikų, didesnių anglies kasyklų Anglijoje atsirado dar iki Hanoverio dinastijos įsiviešpatavimo. Tačiau nuo XVIII a. vidurio pramonės augimas, skatinamas mokslo ir technikos išradimų bei patobulinimų, vyko neregėtais ligi tol žmonijos istorijoje tempais.
Pramonės perversmas buvo ne vienkartinis įvykis, o daugelį dešimtmečių trukęs procesas, tad jo pradžią ir pabaigą galima nustatyti tik apytikriai. Manoma, jog pramonės perversmas baigėsi — visiškai įsigalėjo fabrikų gamyba — XIX a. 4-ame dešimtmetyje. Kaip tik tada Anglija tapo pirmąja pasaulio šalimi, kurioje didumą pajamų davė pramonė ir prekyba.
Pramonei kurti reikėjo kapitalo, darbo rankų ir technikos. Turtingųjų miestiečių sluoksnis Anglijoje gyvavo jau seniai, jis buvo įgijęs didelę įtaką valstybės politikai. Anglija čia turėjo didžiulį pranašumą, palyginti su Prancūzija, kurioje viešpatavo absoliutizmas, o 1685 m. karaliui Liudvikui XIV panaikinus Nanto ediktą, dauguma patyrusių pramoninkų, prekybininkųir amatininkų hugenotų dėl religinių persekiojimų buvo priversti palikti šalį. Tuo tarpu Anglijoje po XVII a.vidurio revoliucijos ir 1688 m. perversmo įsiviešpatavo konstitucinė monarchija ir religinis pakantumas.
Lėšų kaupimo šaltiniai
Lėšų kaupimo šaltiniai buvo gana įvairūs — pajamos iš žemės valdų, valstybinių paskolų palūkanos, pelnas iš kolonijų ir prekybos, pirmiausia su užjūrio šalimis. Viena iš jos šakų — vergų prekyba. Joje XVIII a. Anglija kaip tik ir pirmavo. Daugiau kaip pusė vergų negrų per Atlantą į Amerikos kolonijas buvo pergabenama anglų laivais, nors šia gėdinga ir nežmoniška veikla vertėsi taip pat prancūzai, olandai ir portugalai. Pavyzdžiui, 1771 m. penkiasdešimt aštuoni vergų prekiautojų laivai išplaukė iš Londono ir šimtas septyni — iš Liverpulio, uosto, esančio vakarinėje Didžiosios Britanijos pakrantėje. Iš viso tais metais anglų laivai nuplukdė į Ameriką 50 tūkst. vergų.
“Aptvėrimų plitimas”
Darbo jėgą augančiai pramonei teikė kaimas, kuriame XVIII a. nepaprastai išplito „aptvėrimai”. Visi jiems taikomi draudimai ir apribojimai parlamento aktais buvo panaikinti. Apie pusantro milijono valstiečių ir jų šeimų narių — žemės laikytojų bei jomenų — neteko sklypų. Kai kurie iš jų pasiliko kaime ir parsisamdė fermeriams, tačiau diduma atvyko į miestus ir naujas gyvenvietes, įsikūrusias prie fabrikų ar kasyklų. Jų padėtis buvo vargana, bet vis dėlto geresnė negu valdant Tiudorams ir Stiuartams, kai gauti darbo mieste retai pavykdavo, o valdžia žiauriai persekiojo už vadinamąjį valkatavimą. Vykstant pramonės perversmui samdomaisiais darbininkais virsdavo nusigyvenę amatininkai. Mat fabrikų gaminiai išstumdavo brangesnius amatininkų dirbinius, šie negalėjo išlaikyti konkurencijos.
Technikos išradimai
Samdomųjų darbininkų dirbo jau manufaktūrose, tačiau mašinų jose naudota nedaug arba visai nenaudota. Darbas fabrikuose pritaikant įvairias, vis sudėtingesnes mašinas tapdavo dešimtis ir šimtus kartų našesnis. Pirmiausia rankų darbą mašinos pakeitė audinių gamyboje. Iš kolonijų įvežant daugiau medvilnės, sparčiai augo medvilninių audinių gamyba. Jau XVIII a. pirmoje pusėje buvo išrasta verpimo mašina, bet dar sukama rankomis, 1769 m. išradėjas pramonininkas Arkraitas įsteigė fabriką, kuriame verpimo mašinas suko vandens ratas. Praėjus dvidešimčiai metų, Anglijoje veikė 150 tokių verpimo fabrikų. 1785 m. E. Kartraitas išrado mechanines audimo stakles, kurių našumas buvo 40 kartų didesnis nei dirbančio rankomis audėjo.
Fabrikai pramonės perversmo pradžioje paprastai būdavo statomi ant upės kranto, nes mašinas sukdavo vandens ratas. Reikėjo sukurti tokį variklį, kuris leistų statyti fabrikus ne vien prie upių ir padarytų pramonę mažiau priklausomą nuo vandens jėgos. Tais laikais toks variklis galėjo būti tik garo mašina. Garo jėgą imta naudoti jau XVII a. pabaigoje, ji varė siurblius traukti vandeniui iš anglies bei rūdos kasyklų šachtų.
Garo mašina ir jos pritaikymas
Garo mašiną, mažai tesiskiriančią nuo šiuolaikinių, 1769 m. pagamino Dž. Vatas. Tai buvo universalus variklis, kurį greitai imta taikyti įvairiose pramonės šakose, o kiek vėliau ir garvežiuose, laivuose.
Iš pradžių mėginta pritaikyti garo mašiną važiuoti plentu, bet tokie garvežiai nepaplito: dėl didelio svorio judėjo lėtai, tiesiog klimpdavo į žemę. Tik pastatytas ant metalinių bėgių, garvežys galėjo važiuoti palyginti sparčiai ir traukti vagonus su kroviniais ar keleiviais. Pirmąjį garvežį, kuris traukė aštuonis vagonus 10 km/val. greičiu, 1814 m. sukonstravo Dž. Stefensonas. 1825 m. Anglijoje buvo atidaryta pirmoji pasaulyje geležinkelio linija. Ja traukinys riedėjo 22 km/val. greičiu. O 1829 m. garvežys jau pasiekė tada rekordinį 46 km/val. greitį. Anglijoje, netrukus ir daugelyje kitų šalių, prasidėjo tiesiog karštligiškas geležinkelių tiesimas. Jie sujungė įvairius, dažnai atkampius, rajonus, labai palengvino ir paspartino prekių bei žmonių judėjimą.
Fabrikų mašinoms, garvežiams ir geležinkelių bėgiams reikėjo labai daug metalo. Jau XVIII a. pasidarė aišku, kad lydant jį medžio anglimi, gamybos padidinti neįmanoma.
Mat beveik visi Anglijos miškai jau buvo iškirsti ir sukūrenti. Laimei, tada buvo atrastas būdas, kaip panaudoti geležies lydymui akmens anglis, tiksliau, iš jų pagamintą koksą. Jau 1800 m. Anglijoje buvo užgesintos visos aukštakrosnės, lydančios geležį medžio anglimis. Geležies gamyboje įsivyravus lydymui koksu, Anglija užėmė pirmąją vietą pasaulio geležies gamyboje ir išlaikė ją beveik visą XIX a. Tik pačioje to amžiaus pabaigoje ji atiteko JAV. Anglija – “pasaulio dirbtuvė”
Panašiais tempais didėjo ir tekstilės gamybos apimtis. Jos žaliavos — medvilnės — įvežimas išaugo nuo 4 mln svarų 1764 m. ligi 300 mln. svarų 1833 m.
XIX a. pirmoje pusėje Didžiojoje Britanijoje, palyginti nedidelėje saloje, kurioje gyveno perpus mažiau žmonių nei Prancūzijoje, buvo išlydoma apie pusę pasaulio geležies, išaudžiama daugiau kaip pusė pasaulio medvilninių audinių, iškasami beveik du trečdaliai pasaulio akmens anglies. Anglijos pranašumą rodė ir tai, kad 1830 m. tik viena iš dvidešimties pasaulyje veikusių garo mašinų buvo pagaminta ne anglų darbininkų.
Anglija pasidarė ir iki pat naujųjų amžių pirmojo laikotarpio pabaigos liko „pasaulio dirbtuve”. Žinoma, šis pirmavimas negalėjo trukti be galo. Pramonės perversmas vyko ir kitose šalyse. Angliją sparčiai vijosi JAV ir Vokietija.
Pramoninis pirmavimas glaudžiai siejosi su prekybiniu XIX a. pirmoje pusėje angliški gaminiai buvo laukiami visų žemynų valstybių rinkose, jiems rimtai negrėsė jokia konkurencija. Todėl anglų verslininkai ir vigų politikai reikalavo sumažinti ar net visai panaikinti muitus, šie reikalavimai XIX a. viduryje pamažu buvo įgyvendinti. Anglijos vyriausybė dėjo pastangas susitarti su kitomis valstybėmis dėl abipusio muitų panaikinimo. Kai kada tam panaudodavo ir karinę jėgą, kaip atsitiko Kinijoje. Pramonės perversmas padarė Angliją turtingesnę ir galingesnę, o kartu smarkiai pakeitė jos visuomenę.
