Lietuvos Respublikos visuomenė buvo demokratiška ta prasme, kad nebeegzistavo jokių luominių privilegijų, visų tautybių bei religijų gyventojai, vyrai ir moterys pagal konstituciją ir kitus įstatymus turėjo lygias pilietines teises. Moterys jau pirmuosiuose visuotiniuose – Steigiamojo Seimo rinkimuose naudojosi visiška balsavimo teise, t. y. anksčiau negu JAV, Didžiojoje Britanijoje ar Šveicarijoje.
Beveik visa lietuvių inteligentija, politinių srovių lyderiai, buvo kilę iš kaimo. Visų trijų Nepriklausomos Lietuvos Prezidentų – A. Smetonos, A. Stulginskio, K. Griniaus – tėvai buvo valstiečiai.
Tautinė struktūra
Pirmojo pasaulinio karo metais ne tik smarkiai nukentėjo Lietuvos ūkis, bet ir sumažėjo gyventojų, pasikeitė tautinė jų sudėtis. Iš Lietuvos pasitraukė daug rusų – kariškių, administracijos tarnautojų, inteligentų – iš kurių sugrįžo tik nedaugelis. Nebegrįžo ir beveik pusė Rusijos imperijos karinės vadovybės iškeldintų žydų. 1914 m. žydai sudarė apie 14proc. Lietuvos gyventojų, o 1923 m. surašymo duomenimis – 7,6 proc., 1935 m. apskaičiavimu – 7,15 proc. Žydų taip Lietuvos Respublikos gyventojų mažėjimą lėmė palyginti nedidelis jų gimstamumas ir emigracija. Norinčių emigruoti žydų buvo daug, bet tarpukariu, ypatingai prisidėjus didžiajai ekonomikos krizei, JAV ir Kanada beveik liovėsi įsileisti imigrantus. Anglai labai ribojo žydų imigraciją į Palestiną, kur steigėsi jų tautinis židinys, busimoji Izraelio valstybė. Vokiečių skaičius žymiai išaugo prijungus Klaipėdos kraštą. 1935 m. duomenimis, vokiečiai sudarė 4,1 proc. Lietuvos Respublikos gyventojų. Daug Klaipėdos krašto vokiečių buvo lietuvių kilmės, ką rodė ir jų pavardės, bet jau abejingi ar net priešiški lietuvybei.
Gana gausi buvo lenkų tautinė bendruomenė, bet dėl jų skaičiaus iki šiol tebesiginčijama. Mat dauguma kalbančių lenkiškai buvo lietuvių kilmės, dalis jų neturėjo apibrėžtos tautinės savimonės, paklausti apie tautybę atsakydavo esantys „katalikai“. Tokie neturtingi mažaraščiai valstiečiai galėjo įgyti tiek lietuvišką, tiek lenkišką savimonę. Lietuvos valdžia rūpinosi sugrąžinti juos lietuvybei. 1923 m. surašymo duomenimis, lenkai sudarė 3,2 proc., bet lenkiškai kalbančių buvo daugiau. Tai rodė balsų, 3-iąjį dešimtmetį Seimo ir savivaldybių rinkimuose atiduotų už lenkų sąrašus, procentas, kuris daugiau kaip du kartus viršijo oficialiai pripažintą lenkų gyventojų dalį. Ir Lenkijoje tarpukario metais gyventojų surašymai visada „rasdavo“ mažiau lietuvių, negu jų buvo iš tikrųjų. Tokie dalykai greičiausiai buvo neišvengiami tautinėms valstybėms susikūrus ilgaamžės jungtinės Lenkijos ir Lietuvos žemėse ir vykstant ginčams dėl sienų. Skirtumai tarp lietuvių ir lenkų dažnai būdavo neaiškūs, pasitaikydavo, kad vieni tos pačios šeimos nariai užsirašydavo esą lietuviai, kiti – lenkai. Taip neatsitikdavo tarp lietuvių ir žydų, rusų, vokiečių.
Tautinės mažumos, arba bendruomenės
Absoliučią šalies gyventojų daugumą sudarė lietuviai. 1923 m. surašymo duomenimis, jų buvo 84,2 proc., o 1935 m. (su Klaipėdos kraštu) – 80,6 proc. Bet Lietuvos teritorijoje gyveno ir kitų tautinių bendruomenių, tada vadintų tautinėmis mažumomis. Tokiomis buvo žydai, lenkai, vokiečiai, rusai, latviai, baltarusiai, labai negausūs karaimai ir totoriai. Rusai religiniu pagrindu skyrėsi į dvi grupes: stačiatikius pravoslavus ir sentikius. Pastarieji, kurių daugumos protėviai persikėlė į Lietuvą dar XVIII a., turėjo savitą liaudies kultūrą, bet gyveno išimtinai kaimuose, buvo uždari pašalinei įtakai. Taip rusų stačiatikių buvo nemažai inteligentų – mokslininkų, menininkų, literatų – palikusių ženklių pėdsakų Lietuvos tarpukario kultūroje.
Visos tautinės mažumos, išskyrus karaimus ir totorius, turėjo savas privačias pradines ir vidurines mokyklas, kurios paprastai gaudavo pašalpas iš valstybės biudžeto, jų baigimo atestatai buvo pripažįstami lygiaverčiai valstybinių mokyklų atestatams. Tautinės mažumos, iš kurių tik lenkai buvo katalikai, Nepriklausomoje Lietuvoje turėjo visišką tikėjimo laisvę. Jų dvasininkai naudojosi lygiomis teisėmis su katalikų kunigais, gaudavo finansinę valstybės paramą.
Išskirtinė padėtis tarp Lietuvos tautinių bendruomenių buvo žydų. Beveik visi jie gyveno miestuose ir miesteliuose, daugiausiai vertėsi prekyba ir amatais. Bet tarp jų buvo ir pramonininkų, bankininkų, inteligentiškų profesijų žmonių – gydytojų, inžinierių, advokatų, menininkų. Priklausantys šioms grupėms gyveno pasiturinčiai, bet daugelis smulkiųjų prekybininkų ir amatininkų skurdo. Raštingumu žydai lenkė visas Lietuvos tautines mažumas (išskyrus vokiečius), taip pat lietuvius.
Nepriklausomoje Lietuvoje žydai turėjo atskirą švietimo sistemą, kurią sudarė: pasaulietinės mokyklos su dėstomąja hebrajų kalba, religinės pakraipos dėstomąja hebrajų kalba, pasaulietinės mokyklos dėstomąja jidiš kalba. Didžiuma žydų pasaulietinių pradžios mokyklų buvo valstybinės, o vidurinės — tik privačios, bet jos gaudavo pašalpų iš Švietimo ministerijos, kuri daugeliui mokyklų padengdavo iki pusės jų išlaidų. 1933 m. Lietuvoje veikė 49 gimnazijos, iš jų 15 – žydų. Dalis žydų vaikų mokėsi lietuvių mokyklose ir jų daugėjo. Žydų jaunimas siekė aukštojo mokslo Kauno universitete, kur sudarė trečdalį, o Medicinos fakultete – beveik pusę visų studentų.
Veikė daug žydų kultūros, meno, sporto, labdaros draugijų, kurios išlaikydavo ligonines, senelių ir vaikų prieglaudas, teikdavo paramą vargingiausiems tautiečiams. Gausi buvo žydų spauda, laikraščiai ir žurnalai leidžiami jidiš, hebrajų, o 4-ajame dešimtmetyje jau ir lietuvių kalbomis. Politinės žydų organizacijos, daugiausiai įvairių pakraipų sionistui, turėjo veikimo laisvą. Ji nebuvo panaikinta, o tik ribojama Prezidento A. Smetonos autoritarinio valdymo laikmečiu. Lietuvių opozicinės partijos ir jų spauda tada buvo varžomos daug griežčiau. Pats A. Smetona visada pasisakydavo už draugišką lietuvių sugyvenimą su žydais, bendradarbiavimą statant nepriklausomą Lietuvos valstybę. Tad žydų bendruomenė pagrįstai buvo įsitikinusi, kad kol Lietuvai vadovaus Prezidentas Smetona, jų padėtis nepablogės. Žydai buvo visiškai lojalūs Lietuvos Respublikai. Jų vyrai atlikdavo karo prievolę Lietuvos kariuomenėje, kur judėjų religijos kareivius aptarnavo Krašto apsaugos ministerijos rabinai, panašiai kaip katalikus kunigai kapelionai. Įtakingi žydų veikėjai suvaidino svarbų vaidmenį siekiant Lietuvos tarptautinio pripažinimo pirmaisiais nepriklausomybės metais, parėmė Lietuvą ginčijantis su Lenkija dėl Vilniaus. Tiesa, žydų bendruomenės suartėjimas su lietuviais vyko labai lėtai. Jos kultūros pasiekimai lietuviams liko beveik nežinomi, nors, beje, ir patys žydai tradiciškai tuo mažai tesirūpino.
Socialinė visuomenės struktūra
Lietuva buvo tipiškas žemės ūkio kraštas, ką akivaizdžiai teberodė miesto ir kaimo gyventojų santykis. Nepriklausomoje Lietuvoje gana sparčiai plėtojosi didesnieji miestai, pirmiausia Kaunas, tačiau bendras miestų gyventojų skaičius padidėjo nežymiai. 1939 m. miestiečiai sudarė tik daugiau kaip penktadalį šalies gyventojų. Tokią padėtį lėmė lėta pramonės raida.
Vienas iš modernėjimo veiksnių buvo žemės reforma, beveik panaikinusi dvarininkų žemėvaldą. 1919 m. Lietuvoje bajorų kilmės dvarininkams priklausė apie 26,2 proc. visos žemės, 1939 m. – jau tik truputį daugiau nei 1 proc. Sumažėjimą lėmė ne vien žemės reformos vykdymas – dalį savo valdų dvarininkai išpardavė. Mat Pirmojo pasaulinio karo metais dvarininkų ūkiai nukentėjo labiau nei valstiečių. Didžiumai dvarininkų nepriklausomoje Lietuvoje ūkininkauti sekėsi prastai. Įklimpę į skolas, jie parduodavo ir tą žemę, kuri buvo palikta jiems įgyvendinant reformą. Tarpukariu bajorų kilmės dvarininkija visiškai prarado savo ankstesnį svarbų vaidmenį šalies ūkiniame ir visuomeniniame gyvenime. Tai lėmė ir tautinis veiksnys: didžiuma dvarininkų buvo lenkų tautybės, tad labiau linko į Lenkiją, kur nemažai jų išvyko. Žemės reformos įstatymas nebuvo taikomas Klaipėdos krašte dėl jo autonominio statuso, ten įtakinga jėga išliko vien vokiečiai dvarininkai.
Nepriklausomybės laikotarpiu Lietuvos gyventojų kaimiečių dalis sumažėjo nežymiai, bet pasikeitė jų socialinė sudėtis. Vykdant žemės reformą sklypus gavo dešimtys tūkstančių bežemių ir mažažemių, t. y. atitinkamai padaugėjo vidutinių ir smulkiųjų ūkininkų, o sumažėjo samdomų žemės ūkio darbininkų.
Miestiečių socialinės ir tautinės sudėties kaita Lietuvos Respublikoje glaudžiai siejosi. Lietuvai esant Rusijos imperijos valdžioje, administracijos valdininkai ir tarnautojai buvo rusai. 1915 m. Lietuvą užėmus Vokietijos armijai jie beveik visi išvyko iš šalies. Nepriklausomos valstybės administracijoje daugiausiai dirbo lietuvių, kitų tautybių tarnautojų- labai mažai. Miestuose taip pat smarkiai pagausėjo inteligentijos, mat buvo plečiama švietimo sistema, steigiamos vidurinės bei aukštosios mokyklos ir gydymo įstaigų tinklas. Mokytojai ir aukštųjų mokyklų dėstytojai daugiausiai buvo lietuviai, medikų ir advokatų didžiuma – žydai. Pastarieji tradiciškai vyravo amatų ir prekybos srityse, daugėjo ir užsiimančių šiais verslais lietuvių. Plečiantis, nors ir lėtai, pramonės gamybai ir statyboms (daugiausiai laikinojoje sostinėje Kaune), daugėjo ir darbininkų. Jų didžiumą sudarė lietuviai, pirmiausia persikėlėliai iš kaimo.
Socialiniai ir tautiniai prieštaravimai
Nepriklausomoje Lietuvoje esminga žemės reforma vis dėlto neaprūpino pakankamu žemės kiekiu daugelio mažažemių ir bežemių. Lėtai besiplėtojanti pramonė ir miestai galėjo suteikti pragyvenimo šaltinį tik mažumai šių bedalių. Ne visiems užtekdavo darbo samdiniais pas turtingesnius ūkininkus, be to, atlyginimas čia būdavo menkas. Todėl nemažai kaimiečių vykdavo sezoniniams žemės ūkio darbams į Latviją ir Vokietiją, o ligi pasaulinės didžiosios ekonominės krizės – emigracijon įtolimas užjūrio šalis. Kadangi į JAV dėl ten įvestą apribojimų sugebėdavo patekti tik nedaugelis, tai lietuvių emigracijos srautas nukrypo į Pietų Amerikos šalis – Braziliją, Argentiną, Urugvajų. Jose darbo ir gyvenimo sąlygos buvo prastos, dažnai labai sunkios, bet ir į šias valstybes didžiosios ekonominės krizės metais emigracija visai nutrūko.
Daugiau dėmesio išeivijai Lietuvos vyriausybė ėmė skirti A. Smetonos autoritarinio valdymo metais. Buvo finansiškai remiamos lietuvių mokyklos, parapijos, spauda, įsteigta Draugija užsienio lietuviams remti, lėšas gaudavusi iš valstybės biudžeto. Tačiau, suprantama, Lietuvos valdžia neturėjo galimybių materialiai padėti skurstantiems, ypatingai Pietų Amerikos šalyse, išeiviams.
Miesto darbininkų, ypač kvalifikuotų, atlyginimas buvo žymiai didesnis nei žemės ūkyje dirbančių bet ir vienų ir kitų – mažesnis nei Latvijoje ar Estijoje. Beje, vidutinis atlyginimas, sumažėjo dėl pasaulinės ekonominės krizės, kuri Lietuvą palietė vėliau negu didžiumą kitų šalių. Tačiau ikikrizinis darbo užmokesčio lygis nebuvo pasiektas iki pat nepriklausomybės praradimo. Nemenka bėda buvo nedarbas miestuose, kuris išaugdavo žiemą, kai sumažėdavo statybų, nutrūkdavo įvairūs sezoniniai darbai. Dalis bedarbių buvo samdomi savivaldybių organizuojamiems viešiesiems darbams atlikti, už tai gaudavo menką užmokestį, vadinamą „vargo minimumu“.
Nuo 3-iojo dešimtmečio pabaigos buvo sukurti socialinės rūpybos pagrindai: ligonių kasos ir nelaimingų atsitikimų draudimas. Tačiau ligonių kasų įstatymas nebuvo taikomas žemės ūkio darbininkams, o privataus sektoriaus darbininkams ir tarnautojams neegzistavo nei privalomos pensijos, nei draudimas nedarbo atvejais. Socialinės rūpybos sistema Lietuvoje buvo nepakankama. Tai pirmiausia lėmė neaukštas, nors ir kylantis, ekonomikos lygis, taip pat ir nedidelis valdžios dėmesys.
Sunkiai vertėsi ir dalis amatininkų, prekybininkų, kurių didžiumą sudarė žydai. Pastariesiems labai nenaudinga buvo kooperatinių (o faktiškai valstybinių) žemės ūkio produktų supirkimo ir perdirbimo susivienijimų „Lietūkio“, „Maisto“, „Pienocentro“ plėtra. Ji leido gaminti aukštos kokybės produkciją, smarkiai padidinti eksportą, tačiau drauge išstūmė iš verslo daug privačių žydų prekybininkų – supirkėjų ir eksportuotojų. Šio reiškinio priežastys buvo grynai ekonominės, ne antisemitinio pobūdžio. Kitaip nei dalies privačių lietuvių verslininkų surengta kampanija prieš konkurentus – žydus. Tiesa, ši kampanija nebuvo labai agresyvi, bet priešiškumas žydams didėjo skatinamas ir kaimynės nacistinės Vokietijos. Atvirai jam pasireikšti neleido Prezidento A. Smetonos valdžia.
Valstybės tarnautojai, pirmiausia aukštieji valdininkai ir karininkai, gaudavo didelius atlyginimus. Pvz., kariuomenės pulkininko mėnesio alga 4-ąjį dešimtmetį siekė 750 Lt, o samdiniui vyrui kaime nustatyta minimali metų alga – tik 350 Lt. Tačiau valdininkų buvo nedaug. Antai Užsienio reikalų ministerijos diplomatų ir tarnautojų (įskaitant raštvedžius ir kurjerius) Kaune ir užsienio pasiuntinybėse sąrašuose 1938 m. tebuvo 233 asmenys. Vis dėlto socialiniai prieštaravimai Nepriklausomoje Lietuvoje buvo gana akivaizdūs. Nepasiturinčiųjų sluoksnių nepasitenkinimą išnaudojo nelegaliai veikusi Lietuvos komunistų partija.
Buities pokyčiai
Kasdienis Lietuvos žmonių gyvenimas nepriklausomybės metais žymiai pasuko teigiama linkme. Butų sąlygos pagerėjo tiek miestuose, tiek kaimuose. Kaune nemažai pastatyta moderniai įrengtų daugiabučių ir vienabučių gyvenamųjų namų, kokių anksčiau Lietuvoje išvis nebuvo. Tiesa, juos sau statėsi arba butus nuomavosi vien pasiturintys žmonės. Kaimų naujakuriai, dėl žemės reformos gavę sklypus, daugiausiairentė medinius namus, bet naujoviškesnius, su dideliais langais, lentų grindimis, dengtus jaune šiaudais, o gontais (medžio lentelėmis) arba čerpėmis.
Kito ir žmonių mityba, nors labiau mieste negu kaime. Daugiau imta vartoti kokybiškų “Maisto“ ir „Pienocentro“ įmonių mėsos bei pieno gaminių, vietos gamybos cukraus. Lietuvoje darbininko šeima vartojo mažiau negu Latvijoje ir Estijoje cukraus, pieno, sviesto ir žuvies, bet daugiau bulvių, daržovių, vaisių, kiaušinių ir mėsos.
Vis daugiau žmonių rengdavosi drabužiais iš fabrikuose pagamintų audinių, o ne iš naminių milo ar drobės. Kaimiečiai šventadieniais vis rečiau avėjo vyžomis ir naginėmis, stengėsi pasisiūti ar nusipirkti odinius batus. Daugėjo vyrų ir moterų, įsigijusių dviračius, bet lengvasis automobilis tebeliko retenybe. Miestuose, pirmiausia Kaune, buvo išplėstas telefono tinklas. Visiškai naujas dalykas buvo radijas, deja, Lietuva jo abonentų skaičiumi atsiliko nuo didžiumos Europos valstybių.
Raštingumo ir laikraščių skaitomumo plėtra sudarė palankias sąlygas higienos ir medicinos žinioms ir namų ūkio naujovėms skleisti. Išplito lietuviškų knygų leidyba, tačiau dėl jų brangumo valstiečiai, darbininkai ir smulkieji tarnautojai knygų pirkdavo labai nedaug. Įprasta pramoga tapo filmų žiūrėjimas kino teatruose, kuriuos visuose miestuose ir kai kuriuose miesteliuose įrengė privatūs savininkai. Operos ir dramos teatrai Kaune ir dramos teatras Šiauliuose (vėliau Klaipėdoje), kuriuos daugiausiai lankė inteligentai, buvo valstybiniai, finansuojami iš biudžeto.
Smarkiai pagerėjo susisiekimas. Keleiviai buvo vežami jau ne vien geležinkeliais ir garlaiviais. Kauną su daugeliu apskričių centrų jungė autobusų linijos. Pastarieji visiškai išstūmė vežikus ir pačioje laikinojoje sostinėje.

Tačiau berno metinė alga prie viso užlaikymo svyruoja tik tarp 300 ir 400 litų. Išskyrus didžiąją vasaros darbymetę, visur toliau nuo didelių miestų lengvai gaunamas darbininkas už 2 ar 3 litus per dieną be valgio. Argi galima laikyti tokį uždarbį pakenčiamu? Ir ar galima už jį reikalauti našaus ir sąžiningo darbo? Juk už tuos pinigus jis negali tinkamai pakūrenti savo pečiaus -pilvo, be ko jis virsta paniurusiu, sustingusiu, vos pakrutančiu sutvėrimu. Ir vėl, argi gali jis nesvajoti apie raudoną revoliuciją, apie svieto lyginimą, kai aplink mato vis dėlto ir pasiturinčių žmonių, o kinas jam parodo, radijas ir laikraščiai jam praneša, kad kažkur tolimose žemėse darbininkas daug geriau gyvena, automobiliais važinėjasi, gerai valgo, <…> o jam, skurdžiui, tik užuojautą siunčia.
Ir kol valstybė ir tauta galingomis ir tiksliomis pastangomis nesukurs žymiai geresnių darbo apystovų ir uždarbio progų tai labai sunku pasakyti, ar tikrai mūsų kraštas turi nuostolių, išleisdamas svetur tūkstančius emigrantų, kuriems namie palikusiems ir nekalbėk apie patriotizmą: skurdžius ir alkanas patriotizmu nepersiima jokioj šaly.
