Baudžiavos panaikinimas
XIX a. vid., ypač po Krymo karo (1853-1856), Rusijos imperijoje toliau didėjo feodalinės baudžiavinės sistemos krizė. Gamyba dvaruose nedidėjo, net smuko. Juose mažiau buvo sėjama javų, dvigubai mažiau užauginama bulvių. Padėtį sunkino stichinės nelaimės: epidemijos, nederliai. Dvarininkai savo pajamas siekė išlaikyti didindami valstiečių išnaudojimą. Kildavo valstiečių bruzdėjimų. Nemažai jų buvo nuslopinta karine jėga.
Ryški tokios santvarkos krizė privertė Rusijos valdžią pradėti rengtis panaikinti baudžiavą. 1861 m. vasario 19d. (pagal naują kalendorių – kovo 3-iają) caras pasirašė manifestą ir įstatymus, panaikinusius baudžiavą.
Tai paskelbus, valstiečiai dar du metus privalėjo eiti lažą ir tik paskui galėjo pradėti duoti piniginę duoklę. Bet valstiečiai iš karto liovėsi eiti į dvarą ir metė visus darbus. 1861 m. pavasarį toks valstiečių nepasitenkinimas apėmė 145 Kauno ir Vilniaus gubernijų dvarus. Tais metais vien Kauno gubernijoje į 34 dvarus buvo nusiųsta kariuomenė, kuri privertė valstiečius eiti lažą.
Po baudžiavos panaikinimo buvo įvesta nauja valstiečių valdymo sistema: iš kelių kaimų buvo sudarytos seniūnijos. Joms vadovavo renkamas seniūnas. Kelios seniūnijos, vadovaujamos renkamo viršaičio, sudarė valsčių. Seniūnas ir viršaitis turėjo vykdyti aukštesnės valdžios įsakymus, prižiūrėti, kad valstiečiai mokėtų mokesčius ir atliktų prievoles.
Padėtis Lietuvos visuomenėje
Lietuvoje susiklostė vieno luomo (bajorijos) visuomenė, nes miestiečiai neįgijo teisių valstybės valdyme, o dvasininkai nesusitelkė į savarankišką luomą. Dominuojanti jėga krašte buvo bajorai, kurie etninėje Lietuvoje sudarė 8-12% gyventojų. Didžioji jų dalis kalbėjo lenkiškai, tik kai kurie etninės Lietuvos, ypač Žemaitijos, bajorai kalbėjo lietuviškai. Ši bajorija puoselėjo viltis atkurti bendrą Lenkijos-Lietuvos valstybę. Užkariavus Lietuvą, rusų valdžia smarkiai apribojo bajorijos teises. Bajorai galėjo spręsti tik vidinius savo reikalus ir menkas savivaldos problemas. Vietinius bajorus valstybės reikaluose turėjo pakeisti rusų bajorai valdininkai. Prie bajorijos nuosmukio prisidėjo rusų valdžios pastangos įvesti privalomą tarnybą valdžios organuose arba kariuomenėje. Lietuvos bajorai, kitaip nei rusų, nesiveržė kopti valstybinės karjeros laiptais. Vengimas tarnauti valstybinėse įstaigose bei kariuomenėje buvo pasyvus priešinimasis rusų valdžiai.
Lietuvos miestai, tautybių ir religijų atžvilgiu, buvo margi. Juose viešpatavo žydai, rusai, lenkai. Didelį poveikį miestiečiams turėjo 1861 m. baudžiavos panaikinimas ir valstiečių reforma. Miestuose paspartėjo kapitalizmo raida, išsiskyrė samdomieji darbininkai ir kapitalistai.
Valstiečių luomas ėmė formuotis tik panaikinus baudžiavą. Valstiečiai gavo asmens laisvę, teisę išsipirkti ir naudotis žeme, pasirinkti užsiėmimą ar verslą. Užnemunėje valstiečių reforma buvo pradėta pagal 1864 m. įstatymą. Oficialiai Užnemunės valstiečiai žemės gavo be išpirkos. Tačiau žemės mokesčiai juos sunkiai prislėgė.
Inteligentija ėmė formuotis XIX a. pirmoje pusėje. Pirmiausia tai buvo rusų valdžios aparato valdininkai, bajorų savivaldos renkamų organų tarnautojai. Jie privalėjo būti išsimokslinę, tačiau universitetinis išsilavinimas nebuvo būtinas. Tarp švietimo darbuotojų išsiskyrė Vilniaus universiteto profesūra. Labai marga buvo meninė inteligentija, kuriai didelės įtakos turėjo lenkų kultūra. Nemaža dalis inteligentų buvo dvikalbiai. Nauja lietuvių inteligentija, kilusi iš valstiečių, ėmė formuotis kapitalizmo raidos sąlygomis, jau panaikinus baudžiavą. To meto Lietuvos šviesuomenei aktualiausia buvo tautinio apsisprendimo problema.
Katalikų bažnyčios vaidmuo
Daugumą Lietuvos gyventojų sudarė katalikai. Katalikų bažnyčia buvo svarbi visuomenės gyvenimo jėga. Carai siekė apriboti bažnytinės veiklos laisvę: unitai prievarta verčiami į stačiatikybę, katalikų kunigams draudžiama krikštyti mišrių santuokų vaikus, mėginta įvesti griežtą pamokslų kontrolę. Kita vertus, ši rusų valdžios akcija privertė Katalikų bažnyčią keisti santykius su rusų valdžia ir pačiai atsinaujinti. Griežtą rusų valdžios politiką Lietuvos katalikų atžvilgiu kritikavo ir popiežiai. Carui Nikolajui I sušvelninus antikatalikišką veiklą, susidarė galimybės Vilniaus vyskupystės vadovu tapti Vaclovui Žilinskiui, Žemaičių Motiejui Valančiui. Nors vyskupas M. Valančius buvo tik vienos -Žemaičių vyskupystės vadovas, tačiau jo veikla turėjo įtakos visai Lietuvai. M. Valančiaus pastangomis pasikeitė Lietuvos dvasininkijos sudėtis, jos kultūrinis lygis ir veikla. Jis išugdė naują klierikų kartą, kuri vėliau prisidėjo prie Katalikų bažnyčios atsinaujinimo. Bažnyčios atsinaujinimas, posūkis į liaudį, sutapo su lietuvybės idėjų plitimu. Nuo pat ganytojiškos veiklos pradžios M. Valančius rūpinosi, kad kunigai visoje vyskupystėje mokėtų lietuviškai ir su liaudimi kalbėtų jos kalba. Svarbiausiose parapijose vyskupas stengėsi paskirti savus seminarijos auklėtinius, kurie turėjo pakeisti lenkiškai kalbančius kunigus. Ypač buvo palaikomi jauni kunigai, prisidėję prie lietuviškų knygų rašymo ir leidimo.
M. Valančius darė didelę įtaką visam lietuvių tautiniam sąjūdžiui, kurio priešakyje buvo S. Daukantas. Varniuose susibūrė dauguma lituanistinio sąjūdžio veikėjų, ne vien kunigų, bet ir pasauliečių. 1834-1850 m. S. Daukanto aplinkoje buvo subrandinti ne tik pradinio lietuviško švietimo, bet ir viduriniojo ir net aukštojo mokslo planai (“Žemaičių akademija”).
Tačiau pasaulietinė ir Bažnyčios šviesuomenė skirtingai įsivaizdavo akademijos veiklą. M. Valančius norėjo, kad akademija ruoštų naujus katalikų dvasininkus, S. Daukantas įsivaizdavo akademiją kaip mokslinį lituanistikos centrą, kur būtų ruošiami istorijos ir kalbos darbai. M. Valančius Varniuose bandė įkurti “mažąją akademiją”. Rusų valdžia puikiai suprato, kad vėliau išjos galėjo išaugti žemaičių dvasinė akademija, ir šiuos planus uždraudė.
Kultūros raida (1831-1863)
Šiuo laikotarpiu kultūrinio gyvenimo sąlygos Lietuvoje labai pablogėjo. 1832 m. buvo uždarytas Vilniaus universitetas. Po dešimtmečio toks pat likimas ištiko Vilniaus medicinos-chirurgijos bei Dvasinę akademijas.
Lietuvos kultūrinį gyvenimą formavo kelios kultūros ir mokslo draugijos. Pirmiausia – Vilniaus medicinos draugija, kuri buvo bene vienintelė krašto visuomeninė mokslinė draugija, įsikūrusi ir pradėjusi veikti imperatoriškojo Vilniaus universiteto aplinkoje ir gyvavusi iki 1840 m. Tai sąlygojo gydytojų -anuomet labiausiai organizuotos ir susitelkusios inteligentijos grupės, vaidmuo.
Gydytojai ne tik dirbo medicinos srityje, bet ir įsitraukė į kultūrinį gyvenimą. Įspūdingo Lietuvos kultūros gyvenimo įvykio -garsiojo leidinio “Vilniaus albumas” organizatorius buvo medikas Jonas Kazimieras Vilčinskis. Daug jo kolegų dirbo literatūros, dailės, muzikos srityse.
Reikšmingas įvykis buvo ir 1855 m. įkurta Vilniaus archeologijos komisija bei Senienų muziejus. Šios organizacijos veiklos sritys buvo labai įvairios. Komisija domėjosi istorija bei archeologija, literatūra, daile, architektūra ir net gamtos mokslais. Tai atspindėjo šviesuomenės norą į vieną draugiją suburti visas intelektualiąsias pajėgas. Moksliniuose komisijos tyrinėjimuose dominavo politinės krašto istorijos, o ne lietuvių kalbos ir tautosakos dalykai. Į Vilniaus archeologijos komisiją buvo išrinkti M. Valančius, L. Ivinskis, M. Akelaitis ir kiti žinomi lietuvių visuomenės veikėjai. Tačiau S. Daukantas (jo knygų būta komisijos bibliotekoje) nebuvo priimtas. Matyt, todėl, kad komisija ignoravo lietuvių kalbos ir tautosakos tyrinėjimus.
Lietuvių kultūros centrai po sukilimų dėl rusų represijų buvo išblaškyti. Jie formavosi ir pačioje Lietuvoje, ir toli nuo jos, ypač Rusijos imperijos sostinėje Sankt Peterburge. Lietuvą prijungus prie Rusijos, šiame mieste prasidėjusi lietuvių inteligentijos veikla itin išsiplėtė nuslopinus 1830-1831 m. sukilimą. Dalis inteligentų, negalinčių pragyventi Lietuvoje, čia ieškojo tarnybos arba buvo priversti išvykti iš gimtinės rusų valdžios įsakymu. Sankt Peterburgo lietuvių kultūros centras rūpinosi lietuviškų knygų leidyba, parapinių mokyklų steigimu, lietuvių liaudies kūrybos rinkimu bei tyrinėjimu. Šiame mieste S. Daukantas parašė brandžiausius veikalus, M. Valančius rengė “Žemaičių vyskupystę.”
XIX a. vid. ėmė ryškėti Varnių reikšmė lietuvių kultūriniam sąjūdžiui. 1845 m. Varnių dvasinės seminarijos rektoriumi buvo paskirtas M. Valančius. Jis pasiekė kad seminarijos profesoriais taptų lietuvių raštijai nusipelnę žmonės. Varnių kultūriniam branduoliui priklausė mokytojas iš Rietavo, pirmųjų periodinių lietuviškų kalendorių leidėjas Laurynas Ivinskis, rašytojas Antanas Baranauskas, “Anykščių šilelio” eilėmis puošęs kalendorių puslapius. 1853 m. M. Valančiaus dėka Varniuose buvo atidarytas garsaus Vilniaus spaustuvininko Adomo Zavadskio knygynas, anuo metu didžiausias Žemaitijoje. L. Ivinskis prie knygyno įkūrė skaityklą, iš kurios aplinkiniai galėjo parsinešti knygų į namus. Varniuose buvo sumanyta leisti pirmąjį lietuvišką laikraštį “Aitvaras”, tačiau valdžia nesutiko.
Kitas lietuvių inteligentų būrelis apsistojo gydytojo Petro Smuglevičiaus nuomojamame Svirlaukio dvare (prie Jelgavos, Kuršo gubernijoje). Jame įsikūrė iš Varnių pasitraukęs S. Daukantas, M. Akelatis. Čia buvo brandinama mintis leisti lietuvišką laikraštį “Pakeleivingas”. P. Smuglevičiui pavyko suburti keletą turtingesnių Lietuvos dvarininkų bendram kultūros rėmimo darbui. Tai buvo bene pirmasis kolektyvinio mecenavimo atvejis ano meto Lietuvoje.
Kultūros židiniai anuo metu ruseno daugiausia Lietuvos provincijoje. Vilnius buvo oficialiosios bajoriškosios kultūros centras. Spaustuvės, bibliotekos, teatrai, periodinių leidinių redakcijos ir intelektualų salonai buvo skirti diduomenei. Čia viešpatavo lenkų kultūra, skambėjo lenkų, žydų, rusų kalbos. Per visą XIX a. nė vienoje Vilniaus bažnyčioje nebuvo lietuviškų pamaldų.
Bandymas Vilniuje sutelkti išsisklaidžiusius valstietiškos kilmės lietuvių šviesuolius yra susijęs su Mikalojaus Akelaičio veikla. Jis tikėjosi vieno Vilniaus archeologijos komisijos vadovų A. H. Kirkoro pagalbos leidžiant “Liaudies bibliotekos” leidinius.
