Padėtis Lietuvoje 1918 m. pabaigoje. Bolševikų įsiveržimas į Baltijos šalis
1918 m. lapkričio 11 d. buvo sudaryta pirmoji atsikuriančios nepriklausomos Lietuvos Vyriausybė. Jai vadovavo Augustinas Voldemaras. Prasidėjo valstybės kūrimasis: organizavosi savivaldybės, policija, kariuomenė. 1918 m. lapkričio 11 d. buvo pasirašytos Kompjeno paliaubos. Po paliaubų demoralizuota ir pavargusi vokiečių armija be mūšių, palikdama daug karinio turto, traukėsi iš užimtų teritorijų. Paskui vokiečius slinko Raudonoji armija. 1918 m. pabaigoje ji įžengė į Estiją ir Lietuvą. Bolševikai užėmė ir visą Latviją, išskyrus vakarinę šalies dalį su Liepojos uostu. Vilnių Raudonoji armija užėmė 1919 m. sausio 6 dieną. Į sostinę atvyko V. Kapsukas su revoliucine vyriausybe. Ši „Laikinoji revoliucinė darbininkų ir valstiečių vyriausybė“ buvo sudaryta 1918 m. gruodžio 8 d. J. Stalino nurodymu. Stalinas tada buvo Sovietų Rusijos tautybių reikalų liaudies komisaras. Užimtoje teritorijoje bolševikai kūrė savo valdžią. Jie nacionalizavo stambesnes įmones, dvarininkų, vienuolynų, bažnyčių žemes su visu inventoriumi. Nusavinta žemė nebuvo išdalyta valstiečiams. Skirtingai nei Rusijoje, iš karto pradėti kurti „liaudies ūkiai“. 1919 m. vasario mėn., gavus nurodymą iš Maskvos, buvo paskelbta apie Lietuvos ir Baltarusijos Sovietų respublikų sujungimą ir Litbelo sukūrimą.
Pastangos išsaugoti nepriklausomybę
Artėjant bolševikams Lietuvos Valstybės Tarybos Pirmininkas A. Smetona ir Ministras Pirmininkas A. Voldemaras išvyko į užsienį ieškoti pagalbos. Valstybė trumpai liko be vadovų, bet greitai Mykolas Sleževičius Vilniuje suformavo naują koalicinę Vyriausybę. Svarbiausias šios Vyriausybės tikslas buvo sukurti kariuomenę ir išvaduoti šalį nuo interventų. Jau 1918 m. gruodžio 27 d. Šleževičius kreipėsi į Lietuvos piliečius kviesdamas ginti Tėvynę. Per mėnesį savanoriais užsirašė apie 3 tūkst. vyrų. Iš viso Nepriklausomybės kovų laikotarpiu Lietuvos kariuomenės gretose kovėsi apie 10 tūkst. savanorių.

Vienybėje, kaip broliai, pasidavę viens kitam renkas, eikime drąsiai į kovą, visi, kaip vienas, stokim už tėvynę! Lietuva pavojuje! Vokiečių kariuomenei atsitraukiant, jau įsibrovė Lietuvon svetimoji Rusijos kariuomenė. Ji eina, atimdama iš mūsų gyventojų duoną, gyvulius ir mantą. Jos palydovai – badas, gaisrų pašvaistės, kraujo ir ašarų upeliai. Tad ginkim Lietuvą! Parodykim, jog esame verti amžiais kovotos laisvės. Šiandieną Lietuvos likimas mūsų pačių rankose. Nelaukdami toliau nė valandos, kas myli Lietuvą, kas trokšta laisvės, kas pajėgia valdyti ginklą, stokime visi į Lietuvos Krašto Apsaugą. Būrių būriais eikime iš kaimų, viensėdijų, miestų ir miestelių, eikime iš visų Lietuvos kraštų laisvės ir Tėvynės ginti. Stokime drąsiai pirmi į kovą! Drąsiai, be baimės, kaip mūs tėvai ir sentėviai, užstokim priešams kelią, pakelkim žygį už mūsų Motiną Tėvynę, už Lietuvos Valstybę! Ministeris Pirmininkas M. Savanorių prisiminimai apie pirmąsias Lietuvos kariuomenės dienas
Kaunan atvykome sausio mėn. 6 d. pavakarį. Iš stoties į kareivines traukėme išsirikiavę sudvejintomis gretomis.Tik įsivaizduokite, kaip ši žygiuojanti lietuvių kuopa tuomet atrodė: vieni savanoriai su kailiniais, kiti su menkais švarkeliais, kiti su paltais: vieni įsispyrę į klumpes, kiti su batais, kamašais. Šautuvai daugiausia virvelėmis parišti. Bet uniformuotą kepurę jau visi turėjo, nes jos dar Vilniuje buvo išdalintos. Geriau atrodantieji buvo pastatyti priešakyje. Žinomas daiktas, šita įvairiaspalvė ir dar net su šiokiais tokiais ginklais kuopa kreipė visų praeivių dėmesį, ir ne vienas miesčionis iš Lietuvos kariuomenės gardžiai nusijuokė. Ne vienas į mus ir pirštu rodė. Nežiūrint to visko, savanorių ūpas buvo ko geriausias.

Vyriausybė supirkinėjo ginklus iš vokiečių. Bet tai negalėjo išspręsti apsiginklavimo problemos. Atremti bolševikų puolimą ir apginkluoti armiją padėjo Vakarų šalys. Vokietijos vyriausybė suteikė Lietuvai kelias paskolas, kurių dalis panaudota kariuomenei organizuoti. Į Latviją ir Lietuvą atvyko vokiečių kariai savanoriai. 1919 m. už paskolą, gautą iš Didžiosios Britanijos, Vyriausybė pirko ginklų ir kitų reikmenų Prancūzijoje ir iš JAV kariuomenės sandėlių Europoje. Jau 1919 m. vasario mėn. ką tik susikūrusi Lietuvos kariuomenė kartu su vokiečių savanoriais sulaikė Raudonosios armijos puolimą prie Kėdainių ir Alytaus. Tuo pat metu vokiečiai sumušė bolševikus Žemaitijoje. Raudonąją armiją iš Rytų Lietuvos pavasarį pradėjo stumti lenkai. Balandžio-gegužės mėnesiais lietuviai kariai kartu su vokiečiais atsiėmė Ukmergę, Anykščius, Panevėžį, Kupiškį, Uteną, Rokiškį. Birželio mėnesį baigėsi vokiečių savanorių sutartis. Toliau Lietuvos kariuomenė su bolševikais kovėsi viena. Rugpjūčio mėnesį lietuviai užėmė Zarasus ir įžengė į Latvijos teritoriją. Kovos su Raudonąja armija baigėsi. Sovietų Rusija ir Lietuva taikos sutartį pasirašė 1920 m. liepos 12 d. Maskvoje. Šia sutartimi Rusija pripažino Lietuvos nepriklausomybę ir „visiems amžiams atsisakė” Rusijos „suvereniteto teisių, kurių yra turėjusi lietuvių tautos ir jos teritorijos atžvilgiu“, pasižadėjo atlyginti Lietuvai karo metu padarytus nuostolius, grąžinti iš Lietuvos išvežtą turtą. Sutartimi nustatyta Lietuvos rytinė siena. Lietuvai priskirta didelė teritorija, kurios gyventojų dauguma nekalbėjo lietuviškai. Bolševikai numatė, kad Lietuva, norėdama išlaikyti tą teritoriją, bus priversta konfliktuoti su Lenkija ir nuolatos bendradarbiauti su Sovietų Rusija.
Kovos su bermontininkais
Kovoti su bolševikais į Latviją ir Lietuvą atvyko vokiečių savanoriai. Vokietijos interesas – sustabdyti bolševikų veržimąsi į Vakarus. Šiai vokiečių savanorių armijai, kurios didžioji dalis telkėsi Latvijoje, vadovavo generolas Riūdigeris fon der Goicas. Vėliau šias pajėgas papildė rusai savanoriai, buvę Vokietijos belaisviai. Rusams vadovavo pulkininkai Pavelas Bermontas-Avalovas ir Virgoličius. Pastarasis su 3 tūkst. karių 1919 m. vasarą užėmė didžiąją Žemaitijos dalį. Rusų daliniai buvo vadinami bermontininkais arba kolčiakininkais. Jie nepalankiai žiūrėjo į Lietuvos, Latvijos ir Estijos valstybes ir siekė nedalomos Rusijos atkūrimo. Bermontininkai visiškai ignoravo Lietuvos valdžią, užpuldinėjo lietuvius karius, nuginkluodavo miliciją, plėšikavo, net sušaudydavo jiems neįtikusius žmones. Virgoličius įsakė užimtų teritorijų įstaigose kalbėti rusiškai. Lietuviai prieš juos negalėjo imtis griežtų priemonių, nes armija kovėsi su bolševikais. Bermontininkai net rengėsi Lietuvoje nuversti valdžią. Latvijoje jie suėmė vyriausybę, žudė civilius gyventojus. Lietuvos valdžios atstovai, nepatenkinti demoralizuotų bermontininkų ir vokiečių dalinių siautėjimais, jau nuo liepos mėnesio skundėsi sąjungininkams. Šie įsakė vokiečių savanoriams grįžti į Vokietiją. Įsakymui pakluso tik dalis karių. Bermontas tuo metu turėjo apie 40 tūkst. karių ir stengėsi įsitvirtinti Latvijoje. 1919 m. spalio 9 d. jis pradėjo Rygos puolimą. Latviai, remiami estų ir anglų laivų artilerijos, atsilaikė, o vėliau ir sumušė bermontininkus. Tuo pat metu bermontininkai nesėkmingai atakavo lietuvių karines dalis prie Šiaulių, Pasvalio ir Radviliškio. Po pralaimėtų kautynių dalis bermontininkų pasitraukė iš Lietuvos. 1919 m. lapkričio 12-22 d. lietuviai sumušė jų kariuomenės likučius ir privertė pasitraukti į Rytprūsius.
Lietuvių ir lenkų konfliktas
Po Lenkijos ir Lietuvos valstybės padalijimų žmonių sąmonėje ilgą laiką gyvavo bendros valstybės idealai. Tik XIX a. pabaigoje, tautinio atgimimo metu, Lietuvos šviesuoliai pradėjo kalbėti apie savarankiškos, atskiros nuo Lenkijos valstybės sukūrimą. Šį siekį Lenkijos patriotai laikė bendros valstybės idealų išdavyste. Kai Pirmojo pasaulinio karo metu susidarė sąlygos atkurti Lenkijos valstybę, visos lenkų politinės jėgos siekė vienaip ar kitaip į Lenkiją įtraukti ir Lietuvą. Tam įtakos turėjo ir tai, kad daug įtakingų Lenkijos politikų buvo kilę iš Lietuvos ir su ja glaudžiai susiję. Be to, Lietuvoje, ypač Rytų, gyveno daug lenkų (Vilniuje – apie 50 proc.). Lietuvių veiklą Pirmojo pasaulinio karo metu, siekiant atkurti valstybę, lenkai ir sulenkėję lietuviai laikė provokiška, tenkinančia vokiečių interesus. Lenkų politikai aiškino, kad Lietuvos nepriklausomybė esąs saujelės „litvomanų“ ir vokiečių tarnų prasimanymas, o dauguma gyventojų norį susijungti su Lenkija. Pradėta įrodinėti, kad Vilnius, dėl kurio priklausomumo Lietuvai lig tol niekam nekilo abejonių, turi priklausyti Lenkijai. 1919 m. balandį lenkų kariuomenė puolė Raudonąją armiją ir užėmė Vilnių. Lenkų puolimas vertė Raudonąją armiją trauktis, bet Lietuvos valstybei tai kėlė naujų klausimų: kaip reikės atsiimti sostinę. Lenkijos kariuomenė neapsiribojo kova prieš bolševikus, bet veržėsi gilyn į Lietuvą. Prasidėjo lietuvių ir lenkų susirėmimai, kuriuos pavyko sustabdyti tik įsikišus sąjungininkams (Didžiajai Britanijai ir Prancūzijai). Sąjungininkai buvo suinteresuoti konflikto sprendimu ir 1919 m. liepos 26 d. lietuvių prašymu nustatė demarkacinę liniją tarp konfliktuojančių šalių. Lietuva jos nenorėjo pripažinti, nes lenkų pusėje liko Seinai ir Punskas. 1919 m. Lietuvoje veikė slapta lenkų karinė organizacija – Polska organizacja wojskowa (POW). Jai priklausė nemažai karininkų ir valdininkų. Ši organizacija gaudavusi paramą iš Lenkijos, 1919 m. rugpjūčio pabaigoje-rugsėjo pradžioje planavo Kaune įvykdyti perversmą. Lietuvos saugumo organai atskleidė šiuos planus ir suėmė POW narius. Perversmas neįvyko. Tik keliose vietose prie Kauno planuoto perversmo dienomis sąmokslininkai nupjaustė stulpus ir išardė geležinkelio bėgius.
Nepriklausomybės kovų epizodai (Lietuvos karių prisiminimų fragmentai)
Pėstininkai /lietuvių/ pamažu slenka pirmyn. <…> Pasigirsta ūžesys. Tai du mūsų ir trys vokiški lėktuvai skuba mums į pagalbą. Leidžiasi žemyn ir suka ratą virš mūsų dalių. Skubiai ištiesiame baltus skarmalus ir leidžiame keliolika baltų raketų. Suprato, pakilo ir vienu kartu penki plieniniai ereliai puolė Deltuvos miestelį. Širdis sustodavo plakusi, kai mūsų oro talkininkai čia vienas, čia kitas dingdavo už miestelio stogų. – Pašautas! Krenta! – pasigirsdavo susijaudinę balsai. Bet ne! Vėl visi penki iškyla virš miestelio ir vėl pasineria turgavietės aikštėje. Jų kulkosvaidžiai be paliovos dirba. <…> Bolševikai galvotrūkčiais, lėktuvų lydimi, bėga Ukmergės link. <…> Skubiai stumiamės priekin. Rinkdami pakeliui belaisvius, įeiname į laisvą Ukmergę. Praeiname pro pirmo gegužės vartus, ant kurių raudonom raidėm žiba parašas: „Doloj bielogvardejskuju svoloč!“ <…> Mums ir neįpusėjus valgyti, kuopos vadas sušuko: – Vyrai! Skubiai už ginklo! Artinasi bolševikų šarvuotas automobilis. Turim jį paimti. Išbėgome iš kluono ir, kiek tik galėdami, šaudome į šarvuotį, bet jis, nieko nebodamas, palengva slenka pirmyn, sėdamas iš kulkosvaidžių kulipkas. Kareiviai, pamatę, kad mūsų kulipkos jam nieko nepadaro, išsigando ir visi, kur tik kas įmanydamas, pasileido bėgti.<…> Jį sulaikė mūsų artilerija, kurios pabūgęs pasuko atgal ir visu greitumu nudūmė. Keli sviediniai vos nepaguldė jo ant šono.

Bermontininkų sutriuškinimas prie Radviliškio
Kitą dieną, būtent: lapkričio 22 d. 7 val., naujomis jėgomis pradėtas pulti Radviliškis. Ištisą dieną ėjo atkaklios kovos. Pagaliau, jau pavakarėje, įvyko paskutinė lietuvių ataka. Nuo vokiečių ugnies visame lauke, anot liudininkų, pakilo lyg rūkas ir pajuodavo sniegas. Bet galiausiai bermontininkai neišturėjo ir netvarkoje pasileido bėgti Šiaulių link, palikdami didelį grobį: 15 įvairių patrankų, apie 50 000 artilerijos šovinių, 30 orlaivių, apie 100 kulkosvaidžių, 14 minosvaidžių, apie 50 000 orlaivių bombų, apie 75 000 šovinių šautuvams, 8 automobilius ir dar daugybę kitokio karo, geležinkelių bei kito turto.
Lenkijos ir bolševikinės Rusijos karas ir Lenkijos invazija į Lietuvą
1920 m. balandžio 25 d. Lenkija pradėjo puolimą prieš Sovietų Rusiją. Pradžioje jai sekėsi. Lenkai užėmė Kijevą. Bet jų užnugaris buvo silpnas. Todėl bolševikams pradėjus kontrpuolimą, frontas greitai ritosi į Vakarus. Raudonoji armija užėmė Vilnią. Rusija Lietuvai perleido 1920 m. liepos 12 d. taikos sutartimi pripažintas teritorijas, bet planavo sumušę Lenkiją užimti ir Lietuvą. Lenkams bolševikus pavyko sustabdyti tik prie Varšuvos. Frontas pajudėjo atgal. Vejant Raudonąją armiją, lenkų armijos kairysis sparnas priartėjo prie lietuvių teritorijos, kurią gynė apie 7 tūkst. Lietuvos karių. Prasidėjo susirėmimai. Siekiant nutraukti kovas, stebint Didžiosios Britanijos, JAV ir Prancūzijos atstovams, Suvalkuose prasidėjo derybos. Lietuvos ir Lenkijos derybininkai sutartį pasirašė 1920 m. spalio 7 d. Susitarta nutraukti karo veiksmus, gerbti sutartimi nustatytą demarkacinę liniją. Dar neišsiskirsčius derybininkams atėjo žinia, kad Vilniaus link žygiuoja generolo L. Želigovskio vadovaujama armija. Želigovskis veikė su Lenkijos valstybės viršininko J. Pilsudskio žinia ir pritarimu, bet buvo vaizduojama, kad generolas puola savarankiškai, neklausydamas vadovybės. Greitai didelė Rytų Lietuvos dalis su Vilniumi atsidūrė lenkų rankose. Šį puolimą sąjungininkai pasmerkė, bet nei jie, nei Lenkija nieko nedarė, kad sustabdytų „maištininkus“. Tik 1920 m. lapkričio 17-19 d. lietuviai perėjo į kontrpuolimą. Mūšyje prie Širvintų ir Giedraičių lietuviai pasiekė pergalę. Tautų Sąjungos Karinės kontrolės komisija pareikalavo sustabdyti kovas. Lietuviai su tuo turėjo sutikti, nes nebuvo pajėgūs kovoti su Lenkija, stovėjusia už Želigovskio. Želigovskis, užėmęs Rytų Lietuvą, paskelbė, kad įkuria naują valstybę – Vidurio Lietuvą. Pilsudskis tikėjosi, kad lietuviai bus priversti derėtis su Želigovskiu ir pasiduoti Lenkijos valiai. Lietuvai atsisakius derėtis, „Vidurio Lietuva“ 1922 m. buvo įtraukta į Lenkijos sudėtį. 1920 m. rudens mūšiais su Želigovskio armija baigėsi Nepriklausomybės kovos. Kovose su bolševikais, bermontininkais, lenkais žuvo ar ligoninėse mirė daugiau kaip trys su puse tūkstančio karių. Dar daugiau buvo sužeista. Lietuvos kariai apgynė savo valstybės nepriklausomybę.
