Ūkinė ir politinė situacija
XVIII a. antroje pusėje Lenkijos-Lietuvos valstybėje vyko didžiulės permainos. Vakarų Europoje didėjo paklausa žemės ūkio produktams. Per trumpą laikotarpį Lietuvos pajamos iš eksporto padidėjo keletą kartų. Plito samdomasis darbas ir žemės nuoma. Tačiau ūkio pagyvėjimas reikalavo pertvarkymų valstybėje.
Skubėti daryti reformas vertė ir politinės aplinkybės. Dėl bajorijos laisvių ir privilegijų susilpnėjo karaliaus valdžia, nusilpo jos karinė galia, valstybė atsidūrė ties anarchijos riba. Stanislovas Augustas Poniatovskis, tapęs Lenkijos-Lietuvos valstybės valdovu, siekė sustiprinti karaliaus valdžią. Tam aktyviai pasipriešino Rusija, Austrija ir Prūsija. 1772 m. Prūsija Rusijai ir Austrijai pasiūlė pasidalyti Lenkijos-Lietuvos žemes. Prūsija pasiėmė Pamarį be Gdansko ir Torūnės miestų ir dalį vakarinių prūsų žemių, Rusija – Polocko, Vitebsko, Mstislavlio vaivadijas, Austrija – Galiciją. Didelių plotų atplėšimas nuo valstybės visam kraštui padarė didelės žalos.
Ketverių metų seimas
1788 m. Varšuvoje pradėjo darbą Ketverių metų seimas, kuriame vyravo siekis išsivaduoti iš priklausomybės nuo Rusijos.
Ketverių metų seimas įvedė pastovų valstybės mokestį žemvaldžiams (pasauliečiams ir dvasininkams), iki 100 tūkst. padidino kariuomenę, nustatė naują jos sudarymo ir valdymo tvarką. Miestiečiams buvo suteiktos teisės ir privilegijos: nebūti suimtam be teismo sprendimo, įgyti žemės valdas, užimti tarnybas valstybės administracijoje ir teismuose, siųsti savo delegatus į seimą, tarnauti kariuomenėje karininkais. Šiomis privilegijomis iki tol naudojosi tik bajorai. Pasiturintys miestiečiai galėjo jais tapti. Reformos mažiausiai palietė valstiečius. Jie negavo kilnojimosi teisės, liko baudžiava. Tačiau pirmą kartą pareikšta, kad valstiečiai imami “į krašto teisėtvarkos ir valdžios globą.” Tai reiškė, kad bajorų ir valstiečių sutartys tapo privalomos abiems pusėms.
Seime tuo pat metu išryškėjo ir du skirtingi požiūriai į valstybės ateitį. Vieni, tarp kurių buvo ir S. A. Poniatovskis, siūlė kurti centralizuotą unitarinę valstybę. Karaliaus dvare parengtas projektas skelbė, kad “dvi tautos – lenkų ir lietuvių – sudarytų tik vieną tautą”. Tačiau šis valstybės pertvarkymo projektas buvo nepriimtinas LDK delegatams. Jie, kaip ir anksčiau, reikalavo, kad Lenkijos ir LDK santykiai būtų grindžiami unijos principais, kad kas trečias seimas posėdžiautų LDK (Gardine arba Vilniuje), kad galiotų 1588 m. Lietuvos Statutas, būtų išsaugotas atskiras LDK vykdomosios valdžios aparatas.
1791 m. gegužės 3-iosios konstitucija
1791 m. gegužės 3 d. seimas priėmė “Valstybės įstatymą”, kuris gavo Gegužės 3-iosios konstitucijos vardą. Konstitucija nustatė paveldimą karaliaus valdžią.
Negalėjo vykti tarpuvaldžio seimai, kuriuose savivaliaudavo didikai. Buvo uždraustos konfederacijos (bajorų ginkluoti sambūriai), panaikinta liberum veto teisė. Tai pakirto politinę didikų galią. Įstatymų leidimas buvo perduotas Dviejų rūmų seimui. Bajorų rinkimo į Atstovų rūmus teisę varžė turto cenzas. Tačiau bajorams buvo patvirtintos jų laisvės ir privilegijos. Vykdomoji valdžia pavesta karaliui ir Įstatymų sargybai, kuriai vadovavo karalius. Konstitucijos pagalba buvo numatyta sukurti naujos valstybės valdymo formos – konstitucinės monarchijos pagrindus.
Tačiau konstitucija neišsprendė esminės problemos – kokia – unitarinė ar federacinė – bus pertvarkyta valstybė. Abi pusės – Lenkija ir LDK buvo priverstos daryti kompromisus. Tokiu kompromisu tapo 1791 m. spalio 20 d. seimo priimtas “Abiejų tautų savitarpio garantijos įstatymas”. Jis įteisino bendrą kariuomenę ir iždą, bendrus centrinės valdžios organus (komisijas). LDK buvo pripažinta lygia Lenkijai Abiejų Tautų Respublikos dalimi.
Pasipriešinimas reformoms
Ketverių metų seimo reformoms pritarė tik dalis bajorijos. Dauguma jų buvo nusiteikę prieš reformas, kurios naikino bajorų luomo privilegijas, griovė nusistovėjusią gyvenimo tvarką.
Targovicos miestelyje, Ukrainoje, konstitucijos ir reformų priešininkai parašė pagalbos prašymą Rusijos imperatorei Jekaterinai II. Bajorai buvo raginami eiti gaivinti “sulaužytų” bajorijos laisvių. Konfederatai, kuriems Jekaterina II į pagalbą pasiuntė savo kariuomenę, etmonu išsirinko Simoną Kosakovskį. Lenkijoje ir Lietuvoje prasidėjo karas. Ketverių metų seimas bandė organizuoti pasipriešinimą Rusijai. Tačiau jo neparėmė nė viena Europos valstybė. Jos visą dėmesį buvo sutelkusios į revoliucijos apimtą Prancūziją. Konstitucijos šalininkai buvo nugalėti, Ketverių metų seimo reformos pradėtos naikinti, o konstitucija paskelbta negaliojančia.
Antrasis valstybės padalijimas
1793 m. Peterburge Rusija ir Prūsija pasirašė antrojo padalijimo sutartį. Prūsija užgrobė vakarines lenkų žemes, tarp jų Gdanską, Torūnę ir Poznanę, o Rusija -dešiniakrantę Ukrainą ir dalį Gudijos – Kijevo, Braclavo, Podolės, Minsko vaivadijų, rytinę Vilniaus vaivadijos dalį, Bresto žemę ir dalį Voluinės. Austrija antrajame padalijime nedalyvavo, nes tuo metu kariavo su Prancūzija. Po antrojo padalijimo Lenkijos-Lietuvos valstybė neteko kone pusės teritorijos, joje liko apie 4 mln. gyventojų. Lietuvą užėmė Rusijos kariuomenė, o Lenkijoje valdžią užgrobė konfederatai, Atsidūręs beviltiškoje padėtyje, karalius S. A. Poniatovskis prisidėjo prie konfederatų ir pradėjo derybas su Rusijos atstovais. Seimas, apsuptas Rusijos kariuomenės, pripažino antrąjį padalijimą ir atkūrė buvusią valstybės santvarką. Abiejų Tautų Respublika, apkarpytomis sienomis, atskirta nuo jūrų ir apsupta trijų galingų kaimynų, prarado galimybę savarankiškai vystytis.
1794 m. sukilimas
Nepatenkinti esama padėtimi Gegužės 3-iosios dienos konstitucijos šalininkai sukilo prieš Rusiją. Jie reikalavo išvesti Rusijos kariuomenę, atkurti valstybę 1772 m. sienomis ir pratęsti Ketverių metų seimo reformas.
1794 m. kovo mėn. Lenkijoje prasidėjo sukilimas, kuriam vadovavo Tadas Kosciuška. Balandžio vid. sukilimas persimetė ir į Lietuvą. Vilniuje sukilimą organizavo ir vėliau visos Lietuvos sukilėliams vadovavo Jokūbas Jasinskis. Sukilėliai sudarė vyriausybę – Lietuvos tautinę aukščiausiąją tarybą.
Savarankiška Lietuvos sukilėlių politika Lenkijoje buvo sutikta su nepasitikėjimu. Todėl gegužės pab. lenkų valdžia panaikino Lietuvos tautinę aukščiausiąją tarybą ir nušalino J. Jasinskį nuo vado pareigų.Kol sukilėliai aiškinosi vidaus nesutarimus, Rusija pasiuntė sukilimui malšinti gausesnę, geriau apmokytą kariuomenę. Iki rugsėjo pab. sukilimas Lietuvoje buvo numalšintas. Lenkijoje sukilėlių kovos pasibaigė lapkričio mėn.
Trečiasis padalijimas ir Lenkijos-Lietuvos valstybės likvidavimas
Po 1794 m. sukilimo Lenkijos-Lietuvos valstybės teritoriją okupavo Rusijos, Prūsijos ir Austrijos kariuomenės. Šios valstybės 1795 m. spalio mėn. Peterburge pasirašė Lenkijos-Lietuvos valstybės trečiojo padalijimo aktą.
Buvusios valstybės sostinės atiteko: Vilnius — Rusijai, senoji Lenkijos sostinė Krokuva – Austrijai, o Varšuva – Prūsijai. Po Trečiojo padalijimo Rusijai teko Kuršas, vakarinės gudų žemės, Volynė ir Lietuva iki Nemuno. Lietuvos Užnemunė atiteko Prūsijai. Kitos Lenkijos žemės teko Prūsijai ir Austrijai. 1797 m. sausio mėn. buvo pasirašytas Rusijos, Austrijos ir Prūsijos aktas, kuriuo galutinai buvo užbaigtas ir “įteisintas” Lenkijos-Lietuvos valstybės likvidavimas.
