Užkariavimų ir priespaudos politika
1795 m., po paskutiniojo Lenkijos ir Lietuvos valstybės padalijimo Rusija išplėtė savo teritoriją Vakaruose. Jai atiteko buvusios Lietuvos Didžiosios Kunigaikštystės žemės, dalis Lenkijos. Per Napoleono karus Rusija prisijungė Suomiją, kuri anksčiau priklausė Švedijai. Vienos kongrese Rusijai buvo atiduota po padalijimų Prūsijai priklausiusi didžioji Lenkijos žemių dalis.
Valdant Nikolajui I, Rusija stengėsi plėsti savo valdas Kaukaze. 1826 m., po pergalingo karo prieš Persiją Rusija prisijungė Nachičevanės ir Jerevano provincijas. 1827 m. sutriuškinusi Turkiją, Rusija įsitvirtino Pietų Kaukaze bei Juodosios jūros pakrantėse. Visiškai įsivyrauti Juodojoje jūroje Rusijai sutrukdė Krymo karas. Kai 1853 m. Rusija užpuolė Turkiją, pastarąją parėmė Vakarų Europos šalys, todėl carinė imperija buvo sutriuškinta.
Po pralaimėto Krymo karo Rusija savo dėmesį nukreipė į Rytus ir stengėsi įsitvirtinti Ramiojo vandenyno pakrantėse. 1854 m. Rytų Sibiro generalgubernatoriaus Nikolajaus Muravjovo vadovaujama ekspedicija įkūrė Chabarovsko miestą. Iš šio atramos punkto N. Muravjovas sparčiai plėtė teritoriją į Rytus. Greitai rusų ekspedicijos pasiekė Ramiojo vandenyno pakrantes ir 1860 m. padėjo pamatus Vladivostoko (rus. “valdyk Rytus”) uostui. Kinija buvo priversta pripažinti šiuos rusų užkariavimus.
Beveik tuo pačiu metu Rusija pradėjo veržtis į Viduriniąja Aziją. 1864 m. Rusijos kariuomenė sutriuškino ir užgrobė Kokandos, Chivos, Bucharos chanatus ir įsitvirtino visoje vakarinėje Kaspijos jūros pakrantėje.
Reformos
1856 m. atėjęs į valdžią, caras Aleksandras II įvykdė daug ir labai svarbių reformų. 1861 m. buvo panaikinta baudžiava. Valstiečiams buvo suteikta asmens laisvė, jie galėjo išsipirkti žemę, tačiau išliko valstiečių bendruomenės. Kaimo gyventojai priklausė bendruomenei, kuri valdė visą žemę ir laikėsi tradicinio jos apdirbimo būdo – trilaukės sistemos. Valstiečiai, žinoma, turėjo teisę palikti bendruomenę, tačiau tik labai nedaugelis galėjo įsigyti atskirą ūkį, nes tam neturėjo lėšų. Tik 1905 m. ministru pirmininku paskyrus Piotrą Stolypiną, jis ėmėsi naujos žemės ūkio reformos, pradėjo skirstyti bendruomenes, suteikti kreditus valstiečiams, norėjusiems įsigyti atskirą ūkį. Aleksandro II valdymo metais buvo išplėsta miestų savivalda, reformuota švietimo sistema, atsisakyta rekrutų ėmimo ir įvesta visuotinė karinė prievolė.
Rusijos pramonė, palyginti su žemės ūkiu, vystėsi žymiai sparčiau. Greičiausiai plėtojosi tekstilės ir geležies perdirbimo pramonės šakos. Vyriausybė rėmė geležinkelių tiesimą, teikė lengvatas ir kreditus, tai skatino geležies gavybą ir perdirbimą. Rusijos valdžia skatino ir užsienio investicijas. Ypatingai kapitalo įplaukų padaugėjo po 1897 m., kai į šalį ėmė investuoti ir teikti kreditus Prancūzija, Belgija. Apie 1900 m. Rusijoje veikė 269 užsienio bendrovės, kurios daugiausiai vertėsi naftos gavyba, turėjo elektrotechnikos, chemijos produkcijos fabrikus. XX a. pr. Rusija pasiekė įspūdingų laimėjimų: pagal geležies išlydymą ji užėmė 4 vietą pasaulyje ir aplenkė Prancūziją, pagal plieno išlydymą užėmė 5 vietą pasaulyje.
Nepaisant tokios pažangos, pramonėje būta ir daug sunkumų. Ne visi miestus užplūdę bežemiai valstiečiai galėjo gauti darbo, jų darbo jėga buvo pigi, žmonės išnaudojami. XIX a. pab. Rusijos darbininkų padėtis beveik niekuo nesiskyrė nuo tų sąlygų, kuriomis XIX a. pr., prasidėjus pramonės revoliucijai, gyveno anglų arba prancūzų darbininkai.
Tokiomis sąlygomis susikūrė net politinis judėjimas, kurio dalyviai pavadinti “narodnikais” (“liaudininkais”). Jo atstovai teigė, kad Rusijoje yra socializmo pagrindai – valstiečių bendruomenės. Todėl nelaukiant, kol įsitvirtins kapitalizmas, reikia suorganizuoti valstiečių revoliuciją, nuversti carinę valdžią ir kurti socializmą. Bet neraštingi rusų valstiečiai net nesuprato, ko siekia šie revoliucijos propaguotojai. Nepavykus įvykdyti valstiečių revoliucijos, narodnikai griebėsi teroro. 1881 m. susprogus bombai, žuvo Aleksandras II. Po šio teroro išpuolio valdžia ėmėsi represijų, o apie reformas nebuvo galima net užsiminti.
1905 m. revoliucija
Politinės priespaudos sąlygomis Rusijoje atsirado vis daugiau marksizmo pasekėjų, kurie veikdami pogrindyje kūrė slaptas grupuotes, platino marksistinę literatūrą. Vienas žymiausių rusų marksistų buvo Georgijus Plechanovas (1857-1918 m.), labai daug rašęs, skleidęs socialistines idėjas ir raginęs sukurti darbininkų partiją, kuri galėtų vadovauti ir įgyvendinti socialistinę revoliuciją. 1903 m. užsienyje rusų marksistai pagaliau sukūrė Rusijos socialdemokratų darbininkų partiją (RSDDP), kuri nuo savo gyvavimo pradžios suskilo į dvi frakcijas. Skilimas įvyko dėl prieštaravimų tarp G. Plechanovo bei J. Martovo iš vienos pusės ir Vladimiro Lenino iš kitos. V. Leninas, kurio tikroji pavardė buvo Vladimiras Iljičius Uljanovas, kilęs iš inteligentų šeimos (tėvas buvo mokyklos inspektorius), žavėjosi marksizmu ir revoliucine kova. Kadangi už Lenino siūlymus balsavo daugiau deputatų, tai jo frakcija buvo pavadinta “bolševikais” (rus. “bolše” – “daugiau”). J. Martovą palaikiusieji buvo pavadinti menševikais (rus. “menše” – “mažiau”). Leninas ir bolševikai manė, kad po revoliucijos, nuvertus carizmą, reikia iš karto kurti socializmą. Menševikai taip pat pasisakė už revoliuciją, tačiau teigė, kad po revoliucijos, nuvertus carą, reikia kurti demokratinę santvarką, valdžią atiduoti buržuazijai, o socializmą kurti tik vėliau, kai Rusijoje sustiprės kapitalizmas.
1904 m. Rusija pradėjo nesėkmingą karą prieš Japoniją, dėl to labai pablogėjo ekonominė padėtis. Daug žmonių buvo mobilizuota į kariuomenę, žemės ūkyje trūko darbo rankų. Nepasitenkinimas dėl sunkių socialinių-ekonominių sąlygų virto masiniu protestu. 1905 m. sausio pr. daugelio Sankt Peterburgo fabrikų darbininkai paskelbė streiką. Sausio 9 d., sekmadienį, tūkstančiai protestuotojų patraukė prie Žiemos rūmų, caro Nikolajaus II ir jo vyriausybės rezidencijos. Nors demonstracija buvo taiki, ją pasitiko policija, kariuomenės dalys ir aikštėje prieš rūmus ėmė šaudyti į demonstrantus. Šimtai žmonių žuvo ir buvo sužeisti, dėl to šis įvykis buvo pavadintas “Kruvinuoju sekmadieniu”.
Šios demonstracijos sušaudymas paskatino naujus protestus, prasidėjo streikai kitose Rusijos miestuose, neramumai apėmė ir kaimus. Pralaimėjimas kare prieš Japoniją dar labiau pakurstė revoliuciją. 1905 m. spalio mėn. prasidėjo visuotinis streikas, privertęs carą Nikolajų II paskelbti “Spalio manifestą”. Jame Rusijos imperatorius pažadėjo įvykdyti reformas, išplėsti demokratines laisves ir sušaukti parlamentą – Dūmą. Gavus tokius pažadus, revoliucija atslūgo. Prasidėjo carą palaikančios demonstracijos. Tačiau vyriausybė greitai pažeidė savo pažadus. 1906 m. pr. susirinkusi Dūma jau po dviejų mėnesių buvo paleista. 1907 m. išrinkus antrąją Dūmą, ir ji buvo išvaikyta, suimti net jos deputatai.
Nacionalinis pavergtų tautų judėjimas
Rusija, po XIX a. užkariavimų, tapo milžiniška imperija, kurioje gyveno labai daug tautų. Be vyraujančios rusų nacijos, imperijos pakraščiuose gyveno ukrainiečiai, lenkai, baltarusiai, lietuviai, latviai, estai, suomiai, armėnai, gruzinai, rumunai, Vidurinėje Azijoje – tadžikai, turkmėnai, kazachai, o Sibire ir Tolimuosiuose Rytuose – kitos Rytų tautos.
Nikolajaus I valdymo metais buvo pradėta šių tautų rusinimo politika. Už draudus nacionalines kalbas, siekta, kad visos tautos kalbėtų tik rusiškai, joms būtų primesti rusų papročiai, gyvenimo būdas. Rusinimo politika ypač sustiprėjo XIX a. pab. Į imperijos pakraščius buvo siunčiami rusų valdininkai. Bankuose, geležinkelyje, teismuose ir kitose įstaigose daugiausiai dirbo tik rusų tautybės žmonės.
Tokiai rusinimo politikai buvo pasipriešinta. 1830-1831 m. ir 1863-1864 m. kilo lenkų ir lietuvių sukilimai, buvo bruzdama Šiaurės Kaukaze. Nors ginkluota kova buvo nuslopinta, lenkai, lietuviai, latviai, estai bei suomiai priešinosi “pasyviai”. Žmonės neleido uždaryti katalikiškų arba protestantiškų maldos namų, rėmė savo Bažnyčią. Jei rusų valdžia uždarydavo nacionalines mokyklas, jos buvo kuriamos slaptai ir vaikai vis tiek buvo mokomi nacionaline kalba. Buvo leidžiami tautiniai leidiniai. Nuolatos buvo reikalaujama atstatyti suvaržytas autonomines teises. Dėl tokio pasipriešinimo caro vyriausybė buvo priversta daryti nuolaidų. Jau 1904 m. buvo panaikintas lietuviškos spaudos draudimas. Per 1905 m. revoliuciją pavergtos tautos taip pat pakilo į kovą. 1905 m. caras buvo priverstas atšaukti autonomijos suvaržymus Suomijoje, suteikti daugiau teisių lenkams, latviams, estams ir kitoms tautoms. Tačiau po revoliucijos numalšinimo ministru pirmininku išrinkus P. Stolypiną, rusinimas vėl sustiprėjo. Nacionalinius lyderius tai skatino siekti nepriklausomybės.
