Švietimo epochos pagrindinės idėjos:
1. Švietimo amžius – tai savotiškas humanizmo tęsinys, tačiau švietėjų idėjos gerokai skyrėsi nuo renesanso humanistų, nes jie žymiai daugiau dėmesio skyrė visuomeniniams klausimams. 2. Švietėjų idėjoms didelę įtaką turėjo: gamtos mokslų laimėjimai, XVII a. pasaulietinė Europos filosofija (T. Bekono, R Dekarto pažiūros); 3. Švietėjai tikėjo žmonijos pažanga ir ypatingu švietimo vaidmeniu šiame istoriniame procese, smerkė religinį nepakantumą, įstatymų neteisingumą, luomų privilegijas ir reikalavo visų žmonių lygybės prieš įstatymus. 4. Švietėjų nuomone, visuomenės pertvarkymus turi vykdyti apsišvietę ir švietėjų pažiūras remiantys valdovai. (Tokių valdovų Europoje buvo, ir jie įgyvendino “apšviestojo absoliutizmo” politiką.)
Švietimo epochos idėjų reikšmė:
1. Švietimo idėjos reiškė kylančios buržuazijos siekius. Jų iškeltos laisvės, lygybės ir tautos suveriniteto idėjos buvo įgyvendintos Šiaurės Amerikos kolonijose ir pamėgintos įgyvendinti Prancūzijos revoliucija (nors nebuvo svarbiausia šių revoliucijų priežastis, bet turėjo joms didelę įtaką). 2. Naujos filosofinės, ekonominės, gamtos mokslų ir kitos teorijos sparčiau plito Europoje ir Amerikoje, skatindamos mokslo bei kultūros pažangą bei įvairių šalių apsišvietusių sluoksnių bendradarbiavimą (XVIII a. visuotinai pripažinta bendravimo kalba tapo prancūzų). 3. Švietimo idėjos buvo unikalios savo kosmopolitizmu ir religine tolerancija (šiame amžiuje pasireiškė įvairių tautybių ir skirtingų tikėjimų apsišvietusių žmonių bendravimas ir bendradarbiavimas).
Žymiausieji anglų, prancūzų ir vokiečių švietėjai:
Dž. Lokas (1632-1704) – pirmasis iškėlė “visuomenės sutarties teoriją” (“visuomenės sutartį” sudaro Žmonės, kurie sukuria valstybę savo prigimtinėmis teisėmis, pirmiausia – nuosavybei ir laisvei, apsaugoti); pasisakė už sąžinės laisvę; mane, kad reikia atskirti įstatymų leidimo (parlamentui) ir vykdomąją valdžią (karaliui), viršenybę teikiant pirmajai.
Š. Monteskje (1689-1755) – kritikavo Prancūzijos absoliutizmą ir toliau plėtojo Dž. Loko idėjas apie valdžių atskyrimą (skirstė valdžią i įstatymų leidimo, vykdomąją ir teismų- pastaroji privalo būti nepriklausoma nuo kitų dviejų, o teisėjų sprendimai visada turi atitikti įstatymus); teigė, kad visuomenės įstatymų sistemą lemia daug veiksnių: gamta ir klimatas, gyventojų užimtumas, būdas, papročiai, religija.
Volteras (1694-1778) – manė, kad asmens ir minties laisvė gali būti pasiekta ir valdant apsišvietusiam monarchui, ragino karalius ir filosofus susivienyti prieš bendrą priešą — Katalikų Bažnyčią, kurią smarkiai kritikavo ir išjuokė; puldamas katalikybę, įrodinėjo, kad tikėjimas į Dievą yra būtinas, nes palaiko tvarką valstybėje.
Ž. Ž. Ruso (1712-1778) – smerkė teisinę ir turtinę nelygybę (manė, kad pastaroji skatina pirmąją); siūlė riboti privatinę nuosavybę; teigė, kad valdžia turi priklausyti tautai, kuri nustato valstybės santvarkos formą (geriausia santvarka – respublika); buvo abejingas Bažnyčiai, bet netikėjimą laikė pavojingu visuomenei (bedievis – tai žmogus, nesugebantis gyventi visuomenėje, nemėgstantis įstatymų ir teisingumo).
Ž. Meljė (1664-1729) – kraštutiniausias prancūzų švietėjas, socialistinio visuomenės pertvarkymo teoretikas: ragino panaikinti privatinę žemės nuosavybę, panaikinti skirstymą į luomus, siūlė panaikinti net valstybę, kaip priešišką žmonėms jėgą (dėl to laikomas net anarchizmo pradininku), atmetė religiją, kvietė ginklu nuversti esamą santvarką.
G. Mabli (1709-1785) – nuosaikesnis socialistas, įrodinėjęs, kad žmonijos nelaimių priežastis – privatinė nuosavybė, o blogybes galima sušvelninti įvedus išmintingus įstatymus, kurie ribotų prabangą ir įtvirtintų paprastą gyvenimo būdą.
D. Didro (1713-1784) – inicijavo prancūzų švietėjų subūrimą į vieną grupę ir ėmėsi leisti “Enciklopediją”, kurioje buvo išdėstytos visos tuometinio mokslo sukauptos žinios (straipsnius rašė Volteras, Monteskje, Ruso ir kt įžymūs žmonės – jie vadinami “enciklopedistais”).
I. Kantas (1724-1804), J. G. Fichtė (1762-1814) ir kt. vokiečių mąstytojai daugiausia domėjosi kosmopolitinėmis vieningos žmonijos, pasaulinės pilietybės idėjomis, buvo “apšviestojo absoliutizmo“ šalininkai (tikėjo, kad pažangius pertvarkymus įvykdys valdovai).
“Apšviestasis absoliutizmas”
Nuo XVIII a. vid. daugelio Europos valstybių monarchai vykdė pertvarkymus, kuriais siekė sutvirtinti savo valdžią. Šiuos pertvarkymus palaikė ir skatino švietėjai.
Svarbiausieji pertvarkymai buvo šie:
1. Administracijos centralizavimas.
2. Baudžiamųjų įstatymų sušvelninimas (mirties bausmės apribojimas, kankinimų uždraudimas).
3. Pramonės, prekybos ir žemdirbystės rėmimas, baudžiavos palengvinimas arba panaikinimas.
4. Finansų tvarkymas (didesnis bajorų apmokesti-nimas, vienodesnis mokesčių paskirstymas, lėšų taupymas).
5. Švietimo plėtojimas (mokyklų steigimas).
6. Religinio pakantumo įstatymų priėmimas, Bažnyčios įtakos mažinimas, vienuolynų naikinimas.
“Apšviestojo absoliutizmo” reformos buvo vykdomos daugelyje Europos valstybių: Austrijoje, Prūsijoje, Ispanijoje, Portugalijoje, Danijoje, Švedijoje ir kt. Rusijos imperatorienė Jekaterina II taip pat susirašinėjo su Volteru, tačiau Rusijoje “apšviestojo absoliutizmo” reformos buvo labai paviršutiniškos (nepanaikino baudžiavos, švaistė valstybės lėšas ir t.t).
“Sostų ir filosofų” sąjunga truko iki Didžiosios Prancūzijos revoliucijos, kuri smarkiai išgąsdino monarchus. Po to jiems švietėjai su savo idėjomis atrodė jau pavojingi.
Švietimo sąjudis
XVIII a. Europoje ir Šiaurės Amerikoje vyko galingas kultūrinis sąjūdis, gavęs Švietimo vardą. Rašytojai, filosofai, ekonomistai, vadinami švietėjais, kritikavo seną feodalinę valstybės bei visuomenės santvarką ir siūlė įvairių būdų, kaip ją patobulinti. Pirmą kartą istorijoje labai susidomėta mokslu ir švietimu, kurie, kaip tada atrodė, galį atvesti žmoniją į aukso amžių. Tokiai pažiūrai davė pagrindą nauji mokslo atradimai ir technikos patobulinimai.
Mokslo ir technikos atradimai
O jie tikrai buvo žymūs. Prancūzų matematikai įrodė ir patvirtino didžiojo anglų mokslininko Izaoko Niutono (1643—1727) dar 1687 m. atrastą visuotinės traukos dėsnį. Paryžiaus mokslų akademijos pasiųsti į įvairias Žemės rutulio vietas matematikai bei astronomai išmatavo dienovidinio ilgį. Tai įgalino nustatyti Žemės susiplojimą ties ašigaliais ir apskaičiuoti atstumą ligi Mėnulio. Amerikietis Bendžaminas Franklinas (1706—1790) įrodė, jog žaibas ir griaustinis yra elektros išlydžio reiškinys, ir įrengė pirmąjį žaibolaidį. Skysčių ir dujų plėtimosi tyrinėjimai leido sukurti “ugnies mašinas”, paverčiančias stangrią vandens garo jėgą mechaniniu judesiu. Škotų mechanikas Džeimsas Vatas (1736—1819) pagamino garo mašiną, kurią imta plačiai taikyti pramonėje ir kiek vėliau transporte. Tyrinėdami šilumą ir dujas, fizikai priėjo išvadą, kad bus galima pakilti virš žemės, jeigu pavyks atrasti ką nors lengvesnio už orą. 1783 m. vasarą Prancūzijoje broliai Mongolfjė netoli Paryžiaus paleido balioną, pripildytą pakaitinto oro. Prie baliono pririštame krepšyje buvo gaidys, antis bei avinas. Balionas išsilaikė ore 10 minučių ir laimingai nusileido. Tų pačių metų rudenį pirmieji du žmonės skrido balionu, pripildytu vandenilio. 1785 m. žmogus skrido iš Prancūzijos į Angliją per Lamanšo sąsiaurį. Skridimai balionais pasidarė madingi visoje Europoje, jų stebėti susirinkdavo didžiulės minios. Atrodė, jog greitai pavyks įsavinti oro erdves. Tačiau, kaip žinoma, tai buvo padaryta tik XX a., ir ne su balionais, o su visai kitomis, sunkesnėmis už orą mašinomis.
Tikėjimas proto visagalybė
XVIII a., praminto Švietimo amžiumi, žmonės pervertino proto visagalybę, tikėjo, kad tiesiog ranka pasiekiami nauji nuostabūs atradimai bei išradimai. Taip manyta ne tik pirmaujančiose šalyse, kaip kad Anglija ar Prancūzija. Lenkijos-Lietuvos valstybėje irgi sklido panašios mintys. 1784 m. viename Varšuvos laikraštyje buvo pranašaujama, kad greitai žmogaus gyvenimo trukmę pasiseksią pratęsti ligi kelių šimtmečių, o susisiekimui jūrose būsią galima naudoti banginius. Jais, pažabotais ir pakinkytais, esą bus keliaujama virš vandens ir po vandeniu nuo vieno ašigalio ligi kito. Taip pat gana ryžtingai švietėjai skelbė valstybės ir visuomenės pertvarkos idėjas. Pirmą kartą žmonijos istorijoje su tokiu užsidegimu buvo svarstomi geresnės santvarkos projektai.
Švietimo ištakos ir idėjos
Tai, kas vadinama Švietimu, buvo natūrali visuomenės minties raidos išdava ir kartu tam tikras pasaulietinio humanizmo tęsinys. Anas humanistinis sąjūdis sunyko XVI a., kai Europoje prasidėjo religinio pobūdžio reformacijos judėjimas. Bažnyčios reformacija atgaivino krikščionybę ir nukreipė visuomenės mintį kita linkme nei ta, kuria ją vedė humanistai. Tačiau ilgainiui reformacijos karštligė atlėgo, religiniai ginčai prarado svarbą. Pasaulietinis humanizmas tarsi atgimė XVIII a., tik jau pasikeitęs ir visapusiškesnis. Humanistinė filosofija sekė vien Senovės Graikijos bei Romos pavyzdžiu, o švietėjai jau galėjo remtis XVII a. pasaulietine Europos filosofija. Jos pradininkai buvo anglas Frensis Bekonas (1561—1629) ir prancūzas Renė Dekartas (1596—1650). Naujai pasaulėžiūrai formuotis padėjo gamtos mokslų laimėjimai. Šiuos mokslus XIV—XV a. humanistai nelabai vertino. Esminis švietėjų bruožas, kuriuo jie taip pat skyrėsi nuo humanistų, — gyvas domėjimasis visuomenės problemomis. Valstybės ir visuomenės gyvenimo svarstymai jau buvo praradę religinių ginčų pavidalą, būdingą reformacijos ir net Anglijos revoliucijos laikotarpiams. Tačiau reformacijos ir katalikybės gynėjų ginčai Švietimui taip pat buvo labai reikšmingi. Kovojantys su Katalikų bažnyčia reformacijos veikėjai ir ją ginantys teologai atvirai svarstė ir nagrinėjo daugelį tikybos tiesų, anksčiau neprieinamų jokiai kritikai. Kartą kilusių abejonių jau nesisekė užgniaužti, ir daugelis švietėjų pradėjo netikėti pačiu Dievo ir antgamtinio pasaulio buvimu. XVIII a. būdinga laisvamanybė, suprantama ne tik kaip Bažnyčios bei religijos kritika, bet ir kaip visų visuomenės problemų svarstymas, nesibijant paliesti apkerpėjusių tradicijų ir ilgus šimtmečius visuotinai pripažįstamų tiesų.
Anot didžiojo vokiečių filosofo Imanuelio Kanto (1724—1804), gyvenusio ir kūrusio Rytų Prūsijos sostinėje Karaliaučiuje, Švietimo amžiaus šūkis buvęs: „Išdrįsk būti protingas, turėk drąsos remtis savo protu”. Švietėjai tikėjo, kad žmonija eina pažangos keliu, nors ne visada tas kelias esąs tiesus, jame pasitaiką ir nukrypimų. Kantas rašė, jog istorija yra procesas, kuris atves žmoniją į tobulą visuomenę. Tačiau, pasak švietėjų, tas procesas nevykstąs savaime. Žmones reikią šviesti, mokyti. O tam priešinasi „tamsos jėgos”, ir su jomis tenka nenuilstamai grumtis. Švietėjai smerkė prietarus, religinį nepakantumą, žmonių išnaudojimą bei mulkinimą, neteisingus ir žiaurius įstatymus, luomų privilegijas, reikalavo žmonių lygybės prieš įstatymus. Buvo parengta daug labai įvairių geresnės valstybės santvarkos projektų, ir visuose juose neigta esama feodalinė ir absoliutinė monarchija. Beje, dauguma švietėjų nemanė, kad tiems projektams įgyvendinti būtina revoliucija. Jie bijojo revoliucijos ir tikėjosi pakeisti gyvenimą taikiai. Pertvarką turėjo daryti apsišvietę ir laikąsi švietėjų pažiūrų valdovai. Tokių valdovų Europoje buvo, jie vykdė „apšviestojo absoliutizmo” politiką. Tačiau tos pačios laisvės, lygybės, tautos suverenumo idėjos Šiaurės Amerikos anglų kolonijose ir Prancūzijoje mėgintos įgyvendinti kaip tik revoliucijomis. Švietėjų idėjos nebuvo svarbiausia šių revoliucijų priežastis, bet vis dėlto jas skatino. Švietėjai buvo žmonės iš skirtingų visuomenės luomų ir sluoksnių — bajorijos, dvasininkijos, pasiturinčių miestiečių (buržuazijos), tačiau visi jie reiškė kylančios buržuazijos siekius. Naujos filosofijos, ekonomikos, gamtos mokslų ir kitokios teorijos sparčiai plito Europoje ir Amerikoje. Tam padėjo didėjantis spaustuvių skaičius ir knygų tiražai, o ypač visų Europos šalių apsišvietusių sluoksnių suartėjimas naudojantis prancūzų kalba. XVIII a. prancūzų kalba pasidarė visuotinai pripažinta bendravimo priemonė, vartojama vietoje lotynų kalbos. Su anglų, vokiečių, italų mąstytojų veikalais kitų tautų skaitytojai susipažindavo iš prancūziškų vertimų. Švietimo amžių galima pavadinti ir kosmopolitizmo amžiumi, kai įvairių tautybių žmonės skaitė, rašė ir kalbėjo prancūziškai, o juos jungė masonų draugijos. Ankstesniems šimtmečiams būdinga tarp skirtingos tikybos žmonių nesantaika išblėso, o tautų priešiškumas (nacionalizmas) dar beveik nesireiškė. Švietėjų sąjūdis vyko visose Europos šalyse (taip pat ir Šiaurės Amerikoje), bet didžiausią mastą įgavo Anglijoje, Prancūzijoje ir vokiečių žemėse.
Anglų švietėjai
Švietimo idėjų pradininkai buvo anglų mąstytojai. Jie gyveno ir kūrė šalyje, kurioje XVII a. revoliucija bei 1688 m. perversmas galutinai apribojo karaliaus valdžią, parlamentas paskelbė asmens teisių aktus („Habeas Corpus Act”) ir religinį pakantumą. Džonas Lokas (1632—1704) knygoje „Du traktatai apie valstybės valdymą” stengėsi teoriškai pagrįsti įvykusius pokyčius. Jis vienas iš pirmųjų rašė apie savanorišką „visuomenės sutartį”, kurią sudaro žmonės, įsteigdami valdžią savo prigimtinėms teisėms, labiausiai nuosavybei ir gyvybei, saugoti. Vėliau šias jo mintis išplėto jo prancūzas Ž. Ž. Ruso.
Lokas teigė, kad reikią atskirti įstatymų leidžiamąją ir vykdomąją valdžią, ir viršenybė turinti priklausyti pirmajai, t.y. parlamentui. Kita vertus, parlamentas taip pat neturįs pažeidinėti prigimtinių piliečių teisių. Vykdomoji valdžia — karalius su savo ministrais — valdą prižiūrimi parlamento, kuris turįs teisę nušalinti ministrus ir net karalių, jeigu jie laužo įstatymus. Tačiau kai vykdomoji valdžia nepaiso parlamento ir jos veiksmai kelia grėsmę piliečių gyvybei, nuosavybei bei asmens laisvei, esąs leistinas sukilimas prieš karalių „kaip tironą”. Lokas taip pat stojo už religinį pakantumą, kitaip tariant, sąžinės laisvę. Loko teorija padarė didžiulį poveikį demokratijos raidai Anglijoje, Šiaurės Amerikoje ir kitose angliškos kultūros šalyse. Todėl Lokas dažnai vadinamas anglosaksų demokratijos pagrindėju. Prancūzų švietėjai išplatino Loko idėjas XVIII a. Europoje, keldami pavyzdžiu Anglijos valstybės santvarką, religinį pakantumą bei spaudos laisvę ir dažnokai nepastebėdami tos santvarkos trūkumų. Tačiau, palyginti su Europos žemyno valstybėmis, padėtis Anglijoje iš tikrųjų atrodė artimesnė pažangos idealams. Todėl ir patys anglų Švietėjai nekūrė visuotinės šalies gyvenimo pertvarkos planų, nors įvairias ydas negailestingai išjuokdavo. Garsus rašytojas Satyrikas Džonatanas Sviftas (1667—1745), turėdamas galvoje ministrą pirmininką Volpolį, taip apibūdino parlamentui atsakingos vyriausybės vadovą: „…Pirmasis ministras… neturi kitų jausmų, išskyrus baisų troškimą turtų, valdžios ir garbės; jis vartoja žodžius visokiems reikalams, tik ne savo mintims reikšti; jis niekados nesako tiesos kitaip, kaip norėdamas, kad ji būtų palaikyta melu, ir meluoja norėdamas, kad jo melas būtų palaikytas tiesa; tie, kuriuos jis dergia už akių, tikrai sulauks paaukštinimo; bet jei jis ima tave girti į akis arba kitiems, tai nuo tos dienos esi žuvęs… Turėdami savo rankoj visas vietas, tokie ministrai išsilaiko valdžioj, papirkinėdami senato ir didžiosios tarybos (Lordų ir Bendruomenių rūmų. — A.K.) daugumą; pagaliau, vartodami ypatingą priemonę, vadinamą amnestijos aktu… jie apsisaugoja nuo atsakymo ir pasitraukia iš viešojo gyvenimo apsikrovę turtais, prisiplėštais iš tautos”.
Vokiečių švietėjai
Vokiečių švietėjai beveik nesidomėjo geriausios valstybės santvarkos ir valdžių atskyrimo klausimais. Jie beveik nekritikavo ir Bažnyčios, religijos. Tačiau Vokietijoje plačiai paplito kosmopolitinės vieningos žmonijos, pasaulinės pilietybės idėjos. Kantas svajojo apie amžiną taiką, kuri įsiviešpatausianti tada, kai būsianti sukurta viso pasaulio valstybių sąjunga. Filosofas Johanas Gotlybas Fichtė (1762—1814) klausė, kur yra apsišvietusio europiečio tėvynė, ir pats atsakė, jog pirmiausia tai — visa Europa, o paskui — civilizuočiausia žemyno valstybė, t.y. Prancūzija. Vokiečių švietėjai buvo „apšviestojo absoliutizmo” šalininkai, jie tikėjo, kad pažangius pertvarkymus įvykdys valdovai. Jeigu valdovai esą nepakankamai „apsišvietę”, tai dar nereiškią, jog reikia panaikinti monarchiją. Karalių ir kunigaikščių įpėdiniai, manė vokiečių švietėjai, būsią pažangesni. Į klausimą, ar neribota monarcho valdžia neprieštaraujanti žmonių laisvei ir prigimtinėms teisėms, „apšviestojo absoliutizmo” teoretikai atsakydavo, jog ne, kol jos tikslas esanti visuomenės gerovė ir tobulėjimas.
