Miestų augimas ir jų architektūra
XIX a. antroje pusėje Europoje sparčiai augo miestų gyventojų skaičius. Šis augimas buvo susijęs su plieno ir anglies pramonės raida. Miestai tapo pramonės, finansų ir kultūros centrais. XIX a. pab. jie pastebimai ėmė keistis. 1850-1870 m. Paryžius buvo iš esmės perstatytas. Siauros, kreivos Paryžiaus gatvelės pavirto tiesiomis, plačiomis gatvėmis. Miestų gatves buvo pradėta grįsti akmenimis, atsirado visuomeninis transportas. Ypač sparčiai augo Londonas, kuriame XX a. pr. gyveno 7 mln. žmonių. Nuo XIX a. vid. miestų architektūra neteko stilistinio vieningumo. Įsivyravo eklektika, kuriai būdingas laisvas įvairių stilių derinimas. Architektai savo kūryboje jungė gotikos, klasicizmo, baroko elementus. Ryškiausias tokio derinimo pavyzdys – Parlamento rūmai Londone. Plečiantis miestams buvo statoma daug visuomeninės paskirties pastatų: geležinkelio stotys, bankai, parduotuvės, viešbučiai, daugiaaukščiai gyvenamieji namai. XIX a. pab. statyboje pradėtas plačiai naudoti plienas ir gelžbetonio konstrukcijos. Šių medžiagų naudojimas statybose sudarė prielaidas pastatyti pirmuosius dangoraižius, kurie iškilo Čikagoje ir Niujorke. Pažymint šimtąsias Prancūzijos revoliucijos metines 1889 m. Paryžiuje buvo pastatytas Eifelio bokštas. 300 m. aukščio metalinės konstrukcijos statinį suprojektavo Giustavas Eifelis. Įdomu tai, kad iki Eifelio bokšto atsiradimo beveik penkis tūkstančius metų aukščiausias statinys žemėje buvo Cheopso piramidė.
Gyvenimo sąlygų pasikeitimas
Augant miestams ir tobulėjant technikai, keitėsi varguomenės buitis. XIX a. pr. darbininkai gyveno po 7-8 žmones viename kambaryje. Butuose trūko erdvės ir šviesos. Nebuvo sutvarkyta vandentiekio ir kanalizacijos sistema. Atliekos dažniausiai buvo metamos į artimiausią upę. Stigo švaraus geriamo vandens, todėl dažnai kildavo epidemijos. Tačiau XIX a. pab. gyvenimo sąlygos miestuose ėmė akivaizdžiai gerėti. Pradėta statyti erdvesnius namus, sutvarkytas vandens tiekimas. Darbininkai galėjo dažniau praustis ir skalbti. Tačiau vonia vis dar buvo prabangos dalykas. Anglijos ministro pirmininko rezidencijoje vonios kambarys buvo įrengtas tik 1914 m. Nuolatos gerėjo darbininkų mityba. Dauguma galėjo reguliariai pirkti mėsos ir kiaušinių. Išaugo cukraus, arbatos, kavos vartojimas. Pagerėjus darbininkų mitybai ir higienos sąlygoms, sumažėjo vaikų mirtingumas, ilgėjo vidutinė gyvenimo trukmė, miestuose nebekildavo epidemijų. Paskutinė choleros epidemija Paryžiuje kilo 1884 m. Augant darbo užmokesčiui, darbininkai ėmė pirkti daugiau plataus vartojimo prekių: drabužių, avalynės. Darbo diena sutrumpėjo iki 10 valandų, o šeštadieniais buvo įvesta sutrumpinta darbo diena. Gerėjo ir darbo sąlygos. Darbdaviai daugiau rūpinosi darbo saugumu, todėl dirbant sumažėjo nelaimingų atsitikimų. Pradėtos skirti pašalpos nelaimės, ligos atveju, mokamos senatvės pensijos. Miestuose atsirado visuomeninis transportas. XIX a. pab. miesto gatvėse arkliais vežamus tramvajus pakeitė elektriniai. Londone 1863 m. buvo nutiesta pirmoji metropoliteno linija. Gerėjant gyvenimo sąlygoms, atsirado daugiau laisvo laiko. Darbininkų gyvenimas tapo įdomesnis, įvairesnis. Laisvalaikį buvo galima skirti sportui, teatrui, kinui, koncertams, savišvietai. Miestuose duris atvėrė bibliotekos, muziejai, kino salės. Ypač žmonės mėgo cirką, kuris tuo metu išgyveno savo klestėjimo laikotarpį.
Švietimo raida ir spaudos plitimas
XIX a. pab. daug dėmesio pradėta skirti švietimui. Pramonės įmonėms vis labiau reikėjo išsilavinusių darbininkų, kurie galėtų dirbti su nauja technika. Daugelyje Europos valstybių buvo įvestas pradinis mokymas. Sumažėjo žmonių neraštingumo lygis. XIX a. pab. žymiai padaugėjo žmonių, mokančių skaityti ir rašyti. Tačiau dauguma vaikų mokyklą lankė iki 11-12 metų. Sulaukę tokio amžiaus, vaikai dažniausiai eidavo dirbti. Tik viduriniosios ir aukštesniosios visuomenės klasės tėvai galėdavo leisti vaikus tęsti mokslą vidurinėje mokykloje. Pavyzdžiui, Vokietijoje net 92% vaikų lankė pradinę mokyklą, tačiau tik 8% iš jų mokėsi vidurinėje. Suprantama, jog mokytis aukšto šiose mokyklose galėjo tik nedaugelis.
XIX a. pab. vis daugiau pradėta spausdinti knygų, žurnalų, laikraščių. Tai lėmė keletas priežasčių. 1884 m. išrasta nauja teksto eilučių rinkimo ir liejimo spaudai mašina – linotipas, atpigo popierius, išaugo raštingumo lygis. Verslininkams buvo reikalinga prekes reklamuoti laikraščiuose, kad jas galėtų greičiau ir efektyviau parduoti vartotojams. Spausdinimas tapo svarbia pramonės šaka. Atsirado savaitraščiai ir dienraščiai. Leidėjai, norėdami padidinti laikraščių tiražus, stengėsi sudominti skaitytojus įvairiausiomis temomis. Laikraščiuose buvo spausdinamos kriminalinės kronikos, sporto naujienos, politinės apžvalgos, ekonomikos žinios. Pasirodė ir “geltonosios” spaudos (terminas kilo dėl geltono rašalo, kurį naudojo vienas Niujorko laikraštis) leidinių. Šiuose leidiniuose buvo publikuojamos sensacingos žinios, išgalvoti ir nepatikrinti faktai, dažnai kompromituojantys garsius žmones.

1895 m. gruodžio mėn. 28 d. Paryžiaus gyventojai rinkosi Kapucinų bulvaro kavinėje į pirmąjį kino seansą. Broliai Luji ir Ogiustas Liumjerai demonstravo kelių minučių trumpametražius kinofilmus “Darbininkų išėjimas iš Liumjero fabriko”, “Kūdikio pusryčiai”, “Aplietas laistytojas” ir kt. Didžiausią įspūdį padarė kinofilmas “Traukinio atvykimas į geležinkelio stotį”, kuriame lokomotyvas rieda tiesiai link kameros, t. y. tiesiai į žiūrovus. Per pusę metų “gyvieji paveikslėliai” (taip pradžioje buvo vadinami kino filmai) pavergė visą pasaulį. Minios žmonių plūdo į pirmuosius kino seansus, nes bilieto kainos buvo prieinamos net labai neturtingiems žmonėms. Jau XX a. pr. Europoje ir Amerikoje imta statyti pirmuosius nedidelius kino teatrus. JAV kinoteatrai buvo vadinami nikelodeonais, nes bilietas kainavo tik penkis centus (vieną nikelį).
1897 m. Liumjerų kinematografas pasiekė ir Vilnių. Botanikos sodo koncertų salė per kinoseansus nuolatos buvo pilna. 1905 m. Vilniuje Didžiojoje gatvėje atsidarė pirmasis Lietuvoje kinoteatras “Iliuzija”. Kinas tapo viduriniojo ir žemesniojo sluoksnio žmonių pigiu laisvalaikio praleidimo būdu, nes patekti į koncertų ir teatrų sales jiems buvo per brangu.
Sportas. Olimpinių žaidynių atgaivinimas
Dauguma pasaulyje paplitusių sporto šakų turinys, taisyklės susiformavo XIX a. antroje pusėje ir XX a. pr. Tuo metu įvairiose pasaulio šalyse buvo pradėta rengti sporto varžybas, buvo įkurtos nacionalinės ir tarptautinės sporto organizacijos. Siekiant išplėsti tarptautinį sportinį judėjimą, XIX a. pab. Pjero de Kuberteno iniciatyva tarptautiniame Paryžiaus kongrese buvo priimtas nutarimas atgaivinti olimpines žaidynes. P. de Kubertenas parengė olimpinių žaidynių taisykles, parašė olimpiečių priesaikos tekstą. Olimpinės žaidynės buvo surengtos 1896 m. Atėnuose, kurie pasirinkti ne atsitiktinai, o norint pabrėžti, kad pirmosios olimpiados prasidėjo būtent senovės Graikijoje. Lietuviai pirmą kartą olimpinėse žaidynėse dalyvavo 1924 m.
