Vakarų užkariavimas
XVIII a. pab.-XIX a. pr. JAV sparčiai plėtėsi į vakarus. Šalies teritorija buvo plečiama įvairiai. 1803 m. Napoleonas, nenorėdamas, kad didžiulė Luizianos teritorija atitektų anglams, pardavė ją JAV už 15 mln. dolerių. Po Luizianos prijungimo JAV teritorija padidėjo beveik dvigubai. 1819 m. JAV iš Ispanijos už 5 mln. dolerių nusipirko Floridą ir teises į Oregono žemę. Naujai įsigytos žemės vakaruose ir pietuose buvo paskelbtos valstybės nuosavybe ir pardavinėjamos už nedidelę kainą, o po 1862 m. žemė buvo suteikiama nemokamai su sąlyga, kad ji būtų dirbama. Galimybė nemokamai gauti žemės ir greitai praturtėti viliojo daug naujakurių. Be to, Vakaruose žmogus buvo vertinamas ne pagal kilmę ar paveldėtą turtą, bet už sugebėjimą visko gyvenime siekti savo jėgomis. Ilgainiui amerikiečiai kėlėsi ne tik į JAV priklausančias teritorijas, bet ir į Meksikos žemes: Teksasą, Naująją Meksiką, Kaliforniją.
1846 m. kilo JAV ir Meksikos karas. JAV po laimėto karo prisijungė Naujosios Meksikos, Kalifornijos ir Teksaso žemes, Meksikai už tai sumokėdama 15 mln. dolerių kompensaciją.Per trumpą laiką retai apgyvendintose žemėse įvyko dideli pasikeitimai: išaugo miestai, pradėti tiesti geležinkeliai. Vakarinių žemių kolonizavimas tęsėsi ir XIX a. antroje pusėje. Atradus aukso Kalifornijoje, tik per vienerius metus į šią valstiją atvyko apie 80 tūkst. žmonių. XIX a. vid. JAV teritorija pasiekė Ramųjį vandenyną. Šalies plotas, lyginant su 1776 m., išaugo aštuonis kartus.
Politinės sistemos raida
XVIII a. JAV politiniame gyvenime įsitvirtino dviejų politinių partijų sistema. Po konstitucijos priėmimo pirmąjį dešimtmetį šalį valdė federalistų partija, kuri atstovavo prekybinės ir finansinės buržuazijos interesams. Federalistai pasisakė už artimą valstijų sąjungą su stipria centrine valdžia. Partijos lyderio A. Hamiltono iniciatyva šalyje buvo skatinama pramonės ir prekybos raida, įsteigtas nacionalinis bankas.
Antroji politinė partija – respublikonai atstovavo fermerių ir smulkiųjų savininkų interesams. 1800 m. partijos vadovas T. Džefersonas buvo išrinktas šalies prezidentu. Jis manė, kad JAV centrinė valdžia turėtų spręsti tik užsienio politikos klausimus, paliekant valstijoms kiek galima didesnių savivaldos teisių. Respublikonai rėmė šalyje žemės ūkio raidą bei vakarinių žemių užkariavimą.
Tačiau XIX a. pr., prasidėjus pramonės perversmui, federalistų ir respublikonų partijos prarado valstybėje turėtą įtaką. Jų vietoje iškilo dvi naujos partijos – vigų ir demokratų. Vigus rėmė šiaurinių valstijų prekybininkai ir pramonininkai. Demokratų partiją palaikė fermeriai ir plantatoriai, kuriuos vienijo bendras siekimas skverbtis į vakarines žemes. Iki pilietinio karo JAV politiniame gyvenime įsitvirtino demokratų partija.
Vergija pietinėse valstijose
JAV pietinės valstijos buvo žemės ūkio kraštas, priklausomas nuo šiaurinių valstijų gaminamų prekių ir kapitalo. Didelėse pietinių valstijų plantacijose buvo auginama medvilnė, cukranendrės, tabakas, ryžiai. Tačiau pagrindinis pietinių valstijų verslas buvo medvilnė. Plantacijose buvo naudojamas pigus vergų darbas. Vergija kurį laiką nebuvo aktuali šalies problema. 1808 m. į JAV buvo uždrausta įvežti vergus ir daugelis manė, kad vergija išnyks savaime.
XVIII a. pab. išradus medvilnės valymo mašiną, atskiriančią medvilnės žaliavą nuo sėklų ir kitų priemaišų, pietinėse valstijose suklestėjo prekyba medvilne. Plantatoriai supirkdavo žemę iš smulkiųjų ūkininkų, kurie, ją pardavę, kėlėsi į Vakarus. Plantacijų žemė buvo greitai nualinama, todėl besikeliančių į Vakarus gretas papildė ir plantatoriai. Parduodami medvilnę šiaurinėms valstijoms ir Europai, pietinių valstijų plantatoriai greitai praturtėjo. 15-oje pietinių valstijų
XIX a. vid. juodųjų gyventojų buvo beveik tiek pat, kiek ir baltųjų. Dauguma pietinių valstijų plantatorių neįsivaizdavo plantacijų darbo be vergų.
Ekonomiškai stiprėjant pietinėms valstijoms, praturtėję plantatoriai siekė gauti daugiau valstybinės valdžios ir plėsti savo įtaką šalyje. Jie manė, kad norint išsaugoti savo ekonominius interesus ir vergovę Pietuose, reikia kontroliuoti federalinę valdžią.
Šiaurinių valstijų raida
XIX a. šiaurinės valstijos tapo JAV pramonės, prekybos ir finansų centru. Šiose valstijose sparčiai buvo tiesiami geležinkeliai, kasami kanalai, statomos gamyklos ir fabrikai. Daug dėmesio buvo skiriama vidaus transporto sistemos kūrimui. Gausūs geležies rūdos ir akmens anglies klodai sudarė geras sąlygas metalurgijos raidai. Pagrindinė pramonės šaka buvo medvilninių audinių gamyba. Tačiau plėtėsi vilnonių drabužių pramonė bei mašinų gamyba. Prasidėjus pramonės perversmui, gamyboje imta naudoti garo mašinas. Atsiradus gariniams laivams pagerėjo susisiekimas upėmis, išaugo jūrų prekyba. 85% JAV pramonės produkcijos buvo pagaminama šalies Šiaurėje.
Didelę reikšmę sparčiai šiaurinių valstijų raidai turėjo gyventojų gausėjimas. Dauguma atvykusių imigrantų apsistodavo šiaurinėje šalies dalyje, kurioje jie lengviau galėdavo įsidarbinti. Šiaurinių valstijų miestuose gyveno du kartus daugiau gyventojų negu pietinėse valstijose.
Abolicionistų judėjimas
XIX a. pr. JAV išsiplėtė abolicionistų judėjimas, reikalaujantis šalyje panaikinti vergiją. Šio judėjimo šalininkai siekė išlaisvinti nuo vergijos negrus ir suteikti jiems pilietinių teisių. Abolicionistai kūrė draugijas, leido laikraščius, brošiūras. Didelę įtaką visuomenės nuomonei padarė 1852 m. pasirodęs H. Bičer-Stou romanas “Dėdės Tomo trobelė”. Šioje knygoje autorė vaizdžiai atskleidė vergovinės sistemos žiaurumus. Viena veiksmingiausių kovos formų prieš vergiją buvo vergų bėgimas iš pietinių valstijų. Abolicionistų judėjimo šalininkai suteikdavo vergams prieglobstį šiaurinėse valstijose arba padėdavo pasiekti Kanadą. JAV buvo sukurta “požeminio geležinkelio sistema”, kuria iki pilietinio karo pabaigos naudojosi vergai bėgliai. “Požeminis geležinkelis” turėjo “stotis” – namus, kur slėpdavosi pabėgę vergai, “traukinius” – pabėgusių vergų grupes, “konduktorius” – vergų vedlius.
