Karo veiksmai Vakaruose
Vokietija, paskelbusi karą Prancūzijai ir Anglijai, Vakaruose buvo pasirengusi pulti pagal vokiečių kariuomenės generalinio štabo vado grafo Alfredo fon Šlyfeno parengtą planą. Jame buvo numatyta, kad pergalę prieš Prancūziją ir Rusiją galima pasiekti tik karo pradžioje staigiu smūgiu sutriuškinus Prancūziją, o po to visas pajėgas metus į Rytus prieš Rusiją.
Puolant Prancūziją, sėkmės buvo galima tikėtis tik staigiu manevru apeinant Prancūzijos pasienio įtvirtinimus. Todėl Vokietija, pažeidusi Belgijos neutralumą, užpuolė šią šalį. Vokiečių kariuomenė perjos teritoriją įsiveržė į Prancūziją. Prieš besiveržiančius į Paryžių vokiečius stojo jungtinė prancūzų ir anglų kariuomenė. 1914 m. rugsėjo 5-9 d. prie Marnos užvirė įnirtingi mūšiai. Sąjungininkams pavyko sustabdyti vokiečių kariuomenę.
Pereita prie pozicinio karo. Frontas, iš vienos pusės anglų ir prancūzų, iš kitos – vokiečių, nusitiesė daugiau nei 700 km nuo Šiaurės jūros pakrantės iki Šveicarijos sienos. Abiejose fronto pusėse kareiviai iškasė apkasus, žemines, supylė pylimus ir sutvirtino pozicijas minų laukais bei spygliuotos vielos užtvaromis. Nuo apkasų buvo iškastos perėjos iki toliau nuo fronto buvusių armijų štabų, ginklų ir maisto sandėlių. Buvo sukurta ištisas požeminių slėptuvių, kuriose kareiviai ilsėjosi ir slėpėsi nuo bombų, tinklas. Įveikti šiuos įtvirtinimus abiem pusėm, kaip pasirodė, buvo beveik neįmanoma.
1915m. pavasarį ir viena, ir kita kariaujanti pusė mėgino perimti iniciatyvą ir pralaužti fronte įrengtus įtvirtinimus. Prancūzai ir anglai ne kartą sunkiąja artilerija bandė su žemės paviršiumi sulyginti vokiečių apkasus ir pralaužti gynybą. Visi puolimai buvo nesėkmingi.
1916m. vasario mėn. vokiečiai pradėjo didelį puolimą prieš pagrindinę prancūzų tvirtovę gynybinėje grandinėje – Verduną. Jie tikėjosi, kad, patyrę daug nuostolių, sąjungininkai ims trauktis. Tačiau per devynis mėnesius prie Verduno tvirtovės trukusiose kovose, vokiečiams taip ir nepavyko pralaužti prancūzų ir anglų gynybos. Mūšiuose abi pusės patyrė nepaprastai didelių nuostolių. Žuvo per 700 tūkst. kareivių. 1916 m. lapkričio mėn. vokiečių kariuomenė buvo priversta nutraukti puolimą.
Nepavyko ir 1916 m. liepos-lapkričio mėn. surengtas anglų puolimas. Anglai ir prancūzai jame neteko 614 tūkst., o vokiečiai – 650 tūkst. kareivių. Šios kovos išsekino Vokietiją ir jau 1916 m. pab. vokiečių kariuomenėje ėmė trukti materialių išteklių, ginkluotės, naujų karių.
Mūšiai Rytų fronte
Kitaip nei Vakaruose, įvykiai rytiniame fronte greitai keitėsi. 1914 m. rugsėjo mėn. Rusija, atsiliepdama į prancūzų prašymą padėti sulaikyti vokiečių puolimą Vakaruose, pradėjo pulti Vokietiją Rytų Prūsijoje, o Austrija-Vengriją Galicijoje. Rusų puolimas buvo neparengtas, puolančios armijos nekoordinavo savo veiksmų, joms trūko paramos iš užnugario. 1914 m. rugpjūčio pab. per Karaliaučių vokiečiai traukiniais skubiai permetė kariuomenę prie Tanenbergo ir sutriuškino antrąją rusų armiją. 90 tūkst. rusų kareivių pasidavė į nelaisvę. Po tokios staigios pergalės rugsėjo 6-15 d. vokiečiai prie Mozūrų ežerų apsupo pirmąją rusų kariuomenę. Ji buvo sutriuškinta, žuvo 90 tūkst. rusų karių, 137 tūkst. buvo paimti į nelaisvę. Iki 1914 m. rugsėjo 15 d. rusų karinės pajėgos buvo išvytos iš Rytų Prūsijos. Visai šiai operacijai vadovavo vokiečių kariuomenės vadas Rytuose generolas Paulis fon Hindenburgas ir generalinio štabo viršininkas generolas majoras Ėrichas Liūdendorfas, vėliau perėmę vadovavimą visai Vokietijos kariuomenei.
Austrus nuo triuškinančio rusų puolimo išgelbėjo tik tai, kad rusai įsakymus apie rengiamą operaciją perdavė per radiją, neužšifravę teksto. Sužinoję rusų planus, austrai sugebėjo išvengti didelių nuostolių, bet buvo priversti pasitraukti apie 200 km. Rusijos kariuomenė užėmė visą Galiciją su centru Lvove. Nepasisekė ir austrų puolimas prieš Serbiją. Gerokai mažesnė serbų kariuomenė, pasinaudojusi natūralia kliūtimi – Dunojaus upe, apgynė Belgradą. Mūšiuose austrams į pagalbą atskubėjo vokiečiai, kurie matė, kad sąjungininkų kariuomenė dėl didelio joje tarnavusių slavų tautybės kareivių skaičiaus nėra patikima. 1915 m. gegužės mėn. austrų ir vokiečių jungtinės pajėgos sėkmingai puolė Galiciją. Praradusi beveik 200 tūkst. karių rusų kariuomenė paniškai traukėsi. Tačiau austrų puolimą pristabdė buvusios sąjungininkės – Italijos įstojimas į karą. Nemažai kariuomenės austrams teko permesti į Alpių frontą.
1915 m. vasarą, prisijungus Bulgarijai, vokiečiai ir austrai sutriuškino Serbiją. Tuo pačiu metu vokiečiai užėmė Lenkijos, Lietuvos, Kuršo teritorijas, priklausiusias Rusijos imperijai.
Po tokių pergalių Vokietija pasiūlė Rusijai sudaryti separatinę taiką, kad vėl galėtų visomis pajėgomis pulti Vakaruose. Tačiau Rusijos caras Nikolajus II nesutiko. 1916 m. birželio mėn. generolo Brusilovo vadovaujamos rusų pajėgos perėjo į puolimą ir sudavė skaudų smūgį austrams, kurie neteko 350 tūkst. karių, patekusių į nelaisvę. Po tokios pergalės į karą Antantės pusėje įstojo Rumunija. Vokiečiai vėl buvo priversti iš Vakarų fronto permesti kariuomenę į pagalbą austrams. Rusų puolimas buvo sustabdytas, o netekusi daugiau nei vieno milijono kareivių Rusijos kariuomenė demoralizuota.
Modernių ginklų panaudojimas
Prasidėjus Pirmajam pasauliniam karui abi galingiausios jūrų valstybės – Anglija ir Vokietija – stengėsi sutriuškinti priešininkų karo laivyną. Šioje kovoje anglai visą laiką buvo pranašesni. 1915 m. pavasarį anglų karinis jūrų laivynas kontroliavo jūrų kelius ir sąsiaurius. Vokiečiai, patyrę keletą nesėkmių, vengė išplaukti iš savo uostų. Matydami, kad nepajėgs įveikti anglų atvirame mūšyje, vokiečių admirolai patarė imperatoriui Vilhelmui II pradėti povandeninių laivų karą. Vokiečiai tikėjosi, kad be įspėjimo skandinant prekybinius anglų laivus, Anglija bus atkirsta nuo jos kolonijų ir žaliavų šaltinių. Panašią blokadą prieš Vokietiją vykdė ir Anglija.
1915 m. gegužės mėn. vokiečių karinis laivas atakavo ir nuskandino keleivinį laivą “Lusitania”. Tarp nuskendusių l tūkst. 198 keleivių buvo 128 amerikiečiai. JAV prezidentas Vudras Vilsonas įspėjo Vokietiją, kad tai yra išpuolis prieš Ameriką. Nepaisydami įspėjimų, 1917 m. vokiečiai sustiprino povandeninių laivų karą prieš Antantės šalis. Pranešusi, kad tai kelia grėsmę Amerikos interesams, JAV 1917 m. balandžio mėn. paskelbė karą Vokietijai.
Nuo pat karo pradžios kariaujančios pusės panaudojo dar vieną naują karo priemonę – lėktuvus. Iš jų priešo pozicijos buvo apmėtomos bombomis arba apšaudomos iš kulkosvaidžių. 1916 m. vasarą fronto mūšiuose išryškėjo anglų ir prancūzų karinių oro pajėgų pranašumas.
Prasidėjus poziciniam karui Vakaruose, pirmą kartą karo istorijoje buvo panaudotas dujų ginklas. Dešimtys tūkstančių kareivių Vakarų fronte žūdavo nuo chloro dujų. Buvo nemažai atvejų, kai nuo dujų žūdavo ir savi kareiviai, nes, pasikeitus vėjo krypčiai, dujos buvo nupučiamos į savus apkasus. Tik aprūpinus visus kareivius dujokaukėmis, dujų panaudojimo reikšmė sumažėjo. 1917 m. pr. anglai panaudojo dar vieną naują karo priemonę – tankus. Jų pagalba sąjungininkai ne kartą pralaužė fronto liniją.
Vidaus politika kariaujančiose šalyse
Pirmajam pasauliniam karui prasidėjus, kariaujančių valstybių vyriausybės ėmė reglamentuoti ekonomiką ir riboti piliečių laisvę bei jų teises.
1914 m. rugpjūčio mėn. paskelbus karą, visas šalis užliejo patriotizmo banga. Net opozicinės partijos pritarė vyriausybėms. Taip visą valdymą jos galėjo sukoncentruoti savo rankose. Caras Nikolajus II 1915 m. “suspendavo” Dūmos veiklą. Rusijos likimą sprendė tik caras, jo šeima ir patarėjai. Vokietijoje ir Austrijoje-Vengrijoje parlamentų vaidmuo, vyriausybėse sustiprinant kariškių pozicijas, buvo taip pat apribota. Priimant sprendimus lemiamas žodis buvo generolų. Jų įsakymai buvo viršesni už vietinės valdžios organų. Visi ištekliai ir resursai buvo skirti tik frontui. Kartu pradėta riboti piliečių laisves: darbininkams draudžiama streikuoti, įvesta griežta darbo kontrolė. Visose kariaujančiose šalyse buvo išleisti specialūs įstatymai, kuriais buvo leista suimti bet kurį žmogų, įtariamą veikusį prieš šalies interesus. Spaudai buvo įvesta griežta cenzūra. Laisvą žodį pakeitė karo propaganda, kuria buvo norima įtikinti piliečius būsima pergale. Tačiau po kelerių karo metų, nežiūrint visų šių priemonių, piliečiai suvokė, kokią žalą padarė karas. Visose šalyse prasidėjo demonstracijos, neramumai, o kai kuriose – ir revoliucijos.
